SATURDAY: Go see Homesick Elephant at North Star

They’re based in breezy Los Angeles these days, but Kevin Kelly and Sara FitzSimmons got started here in Philadelphia. Scene heads might remember their indiepop troupe Cheese on Bread, or the open mics their developing duo project, Homesick Elephant, played at The Fire before packing up and heading west. Nowadays the elephant is grown, and totes an impressive full-length record called The Pilgrim and The Pen, celebrating its Philly release this weekend. The new album mixes the duo’s introverted K Records sensibilities with massive country-folk skill – Kelly’s fingerpicking is almost as impressive as FitzSimmons’ vocal delivery. To knock it out of the park, the orchestral ebb and flow across the album — particularly on “Quiet As A Mouse”—will break your heart. Catch their early North Star set and remind them to visit more often.

Sat., July 23, 9 p.m., $10, with Joe Duffey & The Underwater Window Garden, New Motels, Rose Hill Drive, North Star Bar, 2639 Poplar St., 215-787-0488, northstarbar.com.
