SHOWDOWN: Live music in Philly from May 7-13

Friday: Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros (pictured), the large ensemble of dirty-looking hippies who are at the top of the folk-music ladder, is set to release a new album, Here, May 28, which, judging by its single “Man on Fire,” sounds similar to the Theaterp style heard on lead singer Alex Ebert’s solo record Alexander. 8 p.m., $40-$69, The Tower Theatre, 19 S. 69th St., 610-352-2887. ➤ ‎Washington D.C.’s Pygmy Lush is a band that's somewhere in between indie and psychedelic rock. They employ progressive song structures and rhythms with kind-of-trippy breakdowns worked in here and there, but they also have off-beat, simple and quirky artistic qualities. It’s all pretty well-balanced on their 2011 release, Old Friends. 8  p.m., $10-$12, First Unitarian Church, 2125 Chestnut St., 215-563-3980. ➤ Warm, sweet and comforting like the best dessert you’ve had in years is the way Head Aglow, the new 7” release from the The Spinning Leaves, translates to the ear. Core members Michael Baker and Barbara Getes deliver more progressive folk and rock 'n' roll that features the duo’s signature harmonies and music that is either gentle and swallowing or crunky and rollicking. 7 p.m., $10, Yards Brewing Co., 901 N Delaware Ave., 215-634-2600.
