SHOWDOWN: Live music in Philly from May 7-13

POSTED: Monday, May 7, 2012, 1:00 PM

Saturday: Producer and guitarist Derek E. Miller once again brings his signature combination of beefy hard rock/metal riffs and krunk beats that mix so well with Alexis Krauss’ bubblegum pop vocals on Sleigh Bells’ (pictured) recent album, Reign of Terror. But this time around Miller makes the new recordings less offensive to the eardrums and opts to focus a little more on subtle nuances and the keyboards. 9 p.m., $27.50-$42.50, House of Blues, 801 Boardwalk, 609-236-2583. ➤ Full of angst and minor chords, Philly bluegrass/Americana ensemble New Sweden offered up heavy-hearted and jangly tracks to the gods of roots music on last year’s album, The Mountain, which drew comparisons to acts like Good Old War and The Avett Brothers. 7:30 p.m., $8, Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 215-291-4919. ➤ Sounding like a retro-fitted garage-rock band and a combination between the Rolling Stones and the Stooges, the Bulletproof Tigers create an original take on '70s punk/rockabilly that doesn’t go as far as parodying anyone. They have their indie-rock moments where they get into minor progressions and modern guitar tones. 8 p.m., $0-$10, El Bar, 1356 N. Front St., 215-634-6430.
