THE CURATOR: Add your own words of wisdom

City Paper "curator" and art-geek extraordinaire, Courtney Sexton, presents a selection of Philly's must-see gallery exhibits.

The Art of Inspiration As I scoured exhibits for this week's column, I realized the ones I chose all had something in common — visual art that's inspired by words and stories.

Speaking of inspiration, whether you are in need of some or are looking to be a muse, your first stop should be Square Peg Artery & Salvage’s month-long interactive piece, The Art of Inspiration. Installed in the shop’s vestibule where it immediately begs visitors to participate, the exhibit features a wall of pockets made from an array of fabric that's sewn into a tapestry. Next to it is a box labeled “Make a note of inspiration and take a note of inspiration.” Visitors are encouraged to participate by writing notes, drawing pictures, asking questions or quoting favorite works, and then stick their contributions into a pocket where others can read them and add their own. The piece is simple and simply ... inspiring.

Elsewhere throughout the Artery, you’ll find exceptionally handmade gifts, crafts and jewelry, as well as two other current exhibits — artisan Jill Remmer’s collection of medium-format photographs in the Bare Bulb Mini Gallery, and miniature prints by the Midwives Collective's Christiana Kugel in the back room. Kugel’s pieces, of the craft persuasion, are mostly tiny nature scenes that elicit a surprising large sense of the life they depict, especially arranged as they are in Square Peg’s space.

Through January, free, Square Peg Artery & Salvage, 108 S. 20th St., 215-360-5548, squarepegartery.com.
