THE CURATOR: Add your own words of wisdom

"Poetic License" Located in the heart of Fishtown, Highwire Gallery is home to the artist co-op of the same name. It’s a great little space that features really kickass art from local, national and international artists.

This month, like the Artery, Highwire is featuring an interactive exhibit. The hung pieces in this particular collection are all works by co-op members, and vary significantly in style and media. In the middle of the room sits a table, and on the table a typewriter, scratch pads, pens, pencils and notecards. Finally, tacked to the walls amid the woodblock prints, contemporary acrylics and found-object mixed media paintings are at least 100 index cards peppered with swatches of poetry, added to the exhibit by gallery visitors (many artists and aspiring writers themselves).

Poetic License was installed at Highwire to induce a greater sense of awareness regarding what images say when they speak to individual viewers. And, from the perspective of both a viewer and a participant, the show is a success. It's fascinating to see the range of responses generated by each piece of artwork — to take in the piece visually, form your own interpretation, read the poems left by previous visitors, and try to make sense of how they were prompted to write about dinosaurs when you see a net filled with gemstones is a playful and serious experience. While it is fun to follow specific visitors around the room through their poems (many are anonymously typed), the exhibit also begs questions about the malleable nature of a work of art, the Artist, and what it is about certain imagery that stimulates one's mind in ways differently from another. Definitely make the time to check this one out, and don’t be intimidated by the bards who have come before you … add your own words of wisdom.

Through Jan. 29, free, Highwire Gallery, 2040 Frankford Ave., 215-426-2685, highwiregallery.com.
