THE CURATOR: Get involved with the big ideas of your time

Art-geek extraordinaire Courtney Sexton presents a selection of Philly's must-see gallery exhibits. This week, she makes her obligatory First-Friday rounds.

I only know one way to enter Space 1026: it involves a pretty intense doorbell and a climb up to the second floor of an old bank the collective and their gallery have occupied for thirteen years. Vestiges from the building’s former life remain — old tin tiles line the ceiling and intricate molding covers the walls. Now, however, the walls are adorned with years of artwork, and one of the original vaults now serves as a darkroom. The space is maintained by members of the cooperative, who all share studio space in the building and act as a selection committee for the rotating exhibits in the front gallery. To put it bluntly, I think this is my new favorite exhibit space in the city.

This week, I was given a tour of Space 1026 where I had the chance to meet Michael Hall and Tom Bubl, the artists behind this month’s exhibition, “Other Ways In.” Mike and Tom have worked together in various capacities since 2003, but this is their first joint show in over five years. It seems the two have an innate creative connection, as distance (Mike now lives in Providence) hasn’t impacted the way Tom’s technically fluid strokes and shapes complement the organized chaos contained in Mike’s paintings. You definitely don’t want to miss this show; it’s one of those rare chances to see two creative auras successfully fuse into one.

Opening reception Fri., Feb. 3, 7-10 p.m.,  free, through Feb. 25, Space 1026, 1026 Arch St. Second Floor, 215-574-7630, space1026.com.
