THE CURATOR: Get involved with the big ideas of your time

If Space 1026 is my new favorite, then I’ll call Art in the Age my old favorite (not old as in replaced, of course!). This month those crafty folks have teamed up with Two Paperdolls Letterpress and Design House to present “The American Alliance of Unpaid Civil Servants,” a poster series “celebrating the fiery first ladies of the United States of America.” Every February, past presidents (and the current one) are paid homage in all sorts of ways (including a day off for most of us, woo hoo!). However, it is on rare occasion that the real brains behind the operation (the first wives) are given their due. And so, Two Paperdolls have taken it upon themselves to make sure that happens.

Using an antique, 1932 Chandler and Price Platen Press, on display as part of the exhibit, the artists have created an awesome collection of prints that feature presidential imagery, quotes by first ladies, and artistic flourishes branded with their trademark flare for design. Stop by for the opening reception tonight, or hit up one of two printmaking workshops on Feb. 9 or Feb. 23, where you can learn about the history of the letterpress and try your hand at making art of your own. As Babs Bush said, “believe in something larger than yourself; get involved in the big ideas of your time.”

Opening reception Fri., Feb. 3, 6-8 p.m., free, through February, Art in the Age, 116 N. Third St., 215-922-2600, artintheage.com.
