THE CURATOR: Get involved with the big ideas of your time

Rodger LaPelle has been a fixture in the Philadelphia gallery scene since, well, since before I was born. Originally located in Rittenhouse, LaPelle moved his gallery to Old City in 1980, where he has been showcasing fine art ever since. LaPelle certainly has a knack for collecting art and stories, and if you’re interested, he’ll share some of the juicier ones with you – like the years working with David Lynch (whose work is featured in the gallery), or the time he took Marcel Duchamp’s photo.

Currently at LaPelle is a collection of work by Pennsylvania artist Fred Danziger, who incorporates some pieces that resemble work by the late Edward Hopper (another famous face LaPelle was acquainted with). On display this month along with Danziger’s work is a compilation of realist pieces by a variety of artists. The group show, entitled “Philly Style,” highlights Philadelphia artists and art inspired by the city. Danziger’s selections, especially, will make you feel like you’re standing in front of Philly landmarks, rather than inside of a gallery.

Opening reception Fri., Feb. 3, 6-10 p.m., free, through Feb. 26, Rodger LaPelle Galleries, 122 N. Third St., 215-592-0232, rodgerlapellegalleries.com.
