THE CURATOR: Mythical creatures and a bunch of old jeans

Art-geek extraordinaire Courtney Sexton presents a selection of Philly's must-see gallery exhibits. This week, she explores the area's vibrant art-café culture.

Yesterday morning, I had the pleasure of warming up with a latte while checking out paintings by local artist Shawn Bonsky at Green Line Café in Powelton. Bonsky’s collection, “There Are Creatures in the Wilderness.” is a beautifully whimsical series of paintings featuring mythical creatures and endless horizons.

Though his use of restricted palettes in each composition gives a nod to color-field artists like Barnett Newman and Mark Rothko, Bonsky’s paintings evoke more playful, imaginary sensations in his viewers. Using lots of negative space, he first draws you in through attractive combinations of color. When you look closer, however, you enter a world of landscapes where tiny lanterns glow in trees and miniature dinosaurs face off with Sasquatch — Bonsky manages to captures those places in our minds that are usually only active while dreaming.

Through February, free, Green Line Café, 3649 Lancaster Ave., 215-382-2143, boringbot.com, greenlinecafe.com.
