THE CURATOR: Mythical creatures and a bunch of old jeans

At first sight, Elixr’s latest exhibit, “Natural Process: A Study in Worn Denim,” feels like you may have unknowingly stumbled into a Gap commercial. In the front window and on the two main walls of the café, folded and hung over ropes, are several pairs of broken-in jeans. But on further inspection (and a little light reading), you realize this is no ordinary indigo.

Sent by owners from all over the country, each pair of lovingly distressed jeans is labeled with a small tag that tells a story about the owner, where and when the jeans were worn, and how they arrived to their present state of wear. The show makes you pause for a minute to consider the repetitive actions of the everyday – both in and outside  of the human realm. Sure, jeans are perhaps the most generic item of clothing you can wear, but they quickly become some of the most individualized items we own.

On display indefinitely, free, Elixr Coffee, 207 S. 15th St., 215-475-8221, elixrcoffee.com.
