THE CURATOR: Mythical creatures and a bunch of old jeans

Currently on display at the Painted Bride Art Center’s Café Gallery is an installation piece by accomplished local artist Libbie Soffer. Presented in conjunction with InLiquid and FiberPhiladelphia, “Clean Shirts and Dirty Laundry presents an interesting commentary on how we perceive and reinforce class distinctions through dress. While “Natural Processes” uses clothing to tell individual stories, “Clean Shirts” is more about the story of everyday people. On one wall, hundreds of multi-colored, shredded men’s button-down shirts suspend from wire hangers, all with only collars, seams, buttons and sometimes cuffs left in tact. Because of the colors and arrangement of the fibers, the image they create when taken as a whole is quite attractive, and you don’t immediately register what the work is made from.

When you stop by to see “Clean Shirts,” be sure to check out “Reforesting: An Homage to Gil Ott,” a collaborative piece by artist Wendy Osterweil and poet Julia Blumenreich. The exhibit was being set up when I visited, and from what I could tell, it’s definitely worth seeing.

Through March 25, free, Painted Bride Art Center, 230 Vine St., 215-925-9914, paintedbride.org.
