THE GREAT INDOORS: Gift ideas for design heads

POSTED: Monday, December 12, 2011, 4:00 PM

Reporter Meg Augustin takes you inside some of Philly's most fab dwellings to showcase our city's unique grasp on design and architecture.

Design-happy friends can be hard to shop for. They are picky with their styles and fads, and are often in-the-know on cool items before the rest of the world has even caught a glimpse. Luckily, The Great Indoors has pieced together a foolproof list of inexpensive and creative finds for all types of décor and design fiends. And it’s all available locally, making it doubly easy to shop for the design snobs on your list.

[ for the green thumb ]

For the person on your list looking to liven up their city digs, a decorative plant is the perfect bit of décor. Try this terrarium from Terrain and add a plant for more decorative appeal. $46, 914 Baltimore Pike, Glen Mills, shopterrain.com.

[ for the eclectics ]

Grab something unique and meaningful from a thrift store like Uhuru (1220 Spruce St., 215-546-9616), Made You Look (2601 Pennsylvania Ave., 215-235-2386) or the Germantown Estate Warehouse (48 W. Queen Lane, 215-870-5028). Or stop by your local bookstore for a vintage illustration book that suits your friend’s tastes. Add a few frames and wrap up some creative décor.

[ for the local enthusiast ]

Loving your city doesn’t mean you need to decorate your home with Fathead wall decals of DeSean Jackson. If you’ve got a Philly-lover on your list, pass on some class with “We Heart Philly” framed work from Verde. $32, 108 S. 13th St., 215-546-8700, weheartphilly.com.

[ for newlyweds ]

If you’ve got a design-happy couple on your list, try an inexpensive but unique gift like this set of ornaments from Jonathan Adler, and leave the toaster ovens to the bridal registry. $48, 33 N. Third St., 215-547-1999, jonathanadler.com.

[ for the pet lover ]

Does someone on your list who loves pets have a no-pet policy at their rented space? Cheer them up with this awesome “Fish Bowl Hotel” from Hello Home and give that bleeding heart something to love and something to love looking at. $30, 1004 Pine St., 215-545-7060, shophelloworld.com.

[ for the hostess ]

Entertaining knows no bounds, but a classic wine and cheese party never goes out of style. Give the hostess on your list an excuse to get creative with her next wine-and-cheese meetup with this slate cheese board from Terrain. $40.

[ for the memory saver ]

That snap-happy photog on your list will need more than a new lens to showcase their creative fervor. A gorgeous Italian frame like this one from Host will make any photo look like a million bucks. $33-$48, 205 Arch St. and 7908 Germantown Ave., hostinteriors.com.

[ for the tech geek ]

Technology and good design go hand in hand. Show off both with this iPhone alarm  clock reminiscent of the snooze button-clad ones from the ’70s. $40, 111 S. 12th St., 215-829-0606, matthewizzo.com.

[ for the scientist ]

You don’t have to be a chemistry-whiz to appreciate these beauties from Manayunk’s Three Potato Four. The perfect supplemental gift for the unknowns on your list, this gift has something for everyone; it’s vintage, unique, geeky, green and well-designed. $32, 376 Shurs Lane, Building A, Open Saturday and Sunday only, 267-335-3633, threepotatofourshop.com.

[ for the reader ]

A good book doesn’t go without good design, giving most avid readers an appreciation for the prettier things in life. Set them up with this year’s acclaimed Design*Sponge book release available from Terrain. Or really blend the two up and provide that wannabe librarian with some personal library signage from Three Potato Four.
