THE SHOWDOWN: Knowing when to strip it down and fill it out

POSTED: Monday, March 5, 2012, 1:00 PM

Wednesday: Jennifer O’ Connor (pictured) plays a straightforward acoustic-rock that sounds familiar because of her simple chord structures, arrangements, and vocal delivery. But she makes it her own as a strong songwriter and clever arranger of music who knows when to strip it down and when to fill it out with a full band and a little synth. 8 p.m., $10, The North Star Bar, 2639 Poplar St., 215-787-0488. ➤ Remember the singer from Yes with the abnormally high voice? That’s Jon Anderson. He’s flying solo right now making sprawling, hair-raising masterpieces that have a world-music quality. 8 p.m., $49.50, TLA, 334 South St., 215-922-1011.
