THE SHOWDOWN: Knowing when to strip it down and fill it out

Saturday: The Hoppers and Guy Penrod are bringing Southern gospel to University City. When Guy Penrod belts out one of his high notes, regardless of your faith, he makes you believe in a higher power. Come to think of it, it might be Penrod himself. 6 p.m., $30-$40, Irvine Auditorium, 3401 Spruce St, 215-898-5552. ➤ They are bleak, they are dark, they are Philly’s Far-Out Fangtooth, who released their debut LP, Pure and Disinterested, at the end of last year. Goth-rock is an easy way to label them but they’re also a little post-punk and slightly reminiscent of the Blue Oyster Cult. 8 p.m., $7, The Level Room, 2102 Market St., 215-564-4202. ➤ Who couldn’t find a song named “The Referee’s Daughter” to be endearing. Five Minute Major (In D Minor) is the newest LP from longtime, Connecticut-based hockey-rockers, The Zambonis. With hockey-humor, these guys parody different styles of music, sounding like anyone from The Beatles to Lemmy. 7:30, $8, Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 215-291-4919. ➤ At first glance, Bombay Bicycle Club’s (pictured) third album, A Different Kind of Fix, sounds like sugary, indie-pop, but it becomes clear that there is an authentic current running through the remarkably catchy soundscape that the band creates. It might be the sincerity in Jack Steadman’s lead vocals and it might be the simple, delicate mastery that each member possesses. 9 p.m., $15, Union Transfer, 1026 Spring Garden St., 215-232-2100.
