THE SHOWDOWN: Live music in Philly from April 2-8

Tuesday: Band leader and composer Wynton Marsalis will kick off Jazz Appreciation Month at the Kimmel Center with a lecture that examines the role of the arts in creating an American cultural identity, and a performance with members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. 7:30 p.m., $25-$60, The Kimmel Center, 260 S. Broad St., 215-790-5800. ➤ From the land of Björk comes Of Monsters and Men (pictured), who are nowhere near as eccentric as the Icelandic songstress but closer to the catchy-pop side of the music spectrum. Being a young, fresh-faced indie group with catchy, atmospheric and larger-than-life style, they’ve blown up internationally with their hit single, “Little Talks” off their debut release, My Head is an Animal. 7 p.m., $15, TLA, 334 South St., 215-922-1011.
