THE SHOWDOWN: Live music in Philly from April 2-8

POSTED: Monday, April 2, 2012, 1:00 PM

Thursday: Brooklyn-based Americana artist Dayna Kurtz is set for an ambitious double LP release on April 10, Secret Canon: Volume I and American Standard. The first is a collection of classic mid-20th century R&B and jazz interpretations, on which Kurtz exercises her smoky, Nina Simone-esque vocals. In contrast, American Standard is a roots/rockabilly focused album that’s got twang and slide written all over it. 9 p.m., $10, MilkBoy Philly, 1100 Chestnut St., 215-925-MILK. ➤ Former member of the Vivian Girls and the Dum Dum Girls, Frankie Rose (pictured) has always been synonymous with jangly, garage pop. With her latest solo release, Interstellar, Rose shifts toward a dreamy-pop direction without completely leaving her past behind, utilizing ambient synth and guitar tones and tender, reverb-soaked vocals. 8 p.m., $12, The Northstar Bar, 2639 Poplar St., 215-787-0488.
