THE SHOWDOWN: Live music in Philly from April 2-8

POSTED: Monday, April 2, 2012, 1:00 PM

Friday: Brenda is a the three-piece indie band from Portland, Maine that offers straight forward, nothing-fancy rock with two guitars and drums. Their debut, Silver Tower, has a heavy shade of '90s carefree indie rock with raw production quality. Their tight arrangements and endearing lo-fi guitar melodies make it all work. 6 p.m., Lunt Basement 370 Lancaster Ave., 610-896-1228. ➤ Twangy country/folk artist, Robert Ellis, is a very mature-sounding 22-year-old from Houston who sings of heartache and nostalgia in a way that draws comparisons to the great Willie Nelson. But, while he’s a strong singer-songwriter, he’s also an exceptional fingerpicking guitarist. 9 p.m., $12, World Café Live, 3025 Walnut St., 215-222-1400. ➤ Phonographic Arts presents Liberty Fest at the Level Room where Cleveland-based thrash heavyweights Midnight will be the act to see. On their latest album, Farewell To Hell, they sound like a more metal offspring of Motorhead. 8 p.m., $22, The Level Room, 2102 Market St., 215-564-4202.
