SHOWDOWN: Live music in Philly from April 30-May 6

POSTED: Monday, April 30, 2012, 1:00 PM

Thursday: Synth pop group Xiu Xiu combine dance and rock on their March release, Always. With lead vocals that are hushed and trembling, matched with groovy up-tempo beats, their music has a dark streak to it that doesn’t overpower the dance vibe. 8:30 p.m., $13-$14, First Unitarian Church, 2125 Chestnut St., 215-563-3980. ➤ Heavy-hearted Indie outfit Oldermost (pictured) rock nostalgic guitar riffs and melodies that create a dreamy effect on their 2010 self-titled LP that is anything but silly. Comparable to bands like My Morning Jacket, Bright Eyes and even Fleet Foxes, this Philly band goes for the emotional jugular like a ravenous lion. 9 p.m., $8-$10, MilkBoy Philly, 1100 Chestnut St., 215-925-6455.
