SHOWDOWN: Live music in Philly from April 30-May 6

POSTED: Monday, April 30, 2012, 1:00 PM

Friday: Folk outfit Woods (pictured) sound just as bucolic as their name. Their last full-length, released in 2011, features bright and poppy acoustic instrumentation coupled with soft, high-pitched vocals. 9:15 p.m., $12, Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 215-739-9684. ➤ After making their TV debut performance on Letterman, indie-pop duo Electric Guest will roll through town brandishing a set list that will no doubt include smooth R&B/rock-influenced songs from their debut LP, Mondo, which showcases buttery falsetto from standout lead singer, Asa Taccone . 8 p.m., $10, Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 215-291-4919. ➤ Not having released a studio album since 2004’s Christmas, metal/post hardcore/doom band Old Man Gloom (members of Isis, Zozobra and Converge), have proclaimed that "hell has frozen over" with the announcement of their spring U.S. tour dates. 7:30 p.m., $12-$14, First Unitarian Church, 2125 Chestnut St., 215-563-3980. ➤ Carlisle, Pa resident, drummer for stoner-metal band Pearls and Brass and singer-songwriter Daughn Gibson revealed his solo chops back in March with the debut release All Hell, a blend of country and moody electro and a deep, Ian Curtis-esque vocal style. 8:30 p.m., $10, Ortlieb’s Lounge, 847 N. Third St., 267-324-3348.
