The Philadelphia Science Festival officially kicks off on Friday, but Saturday is the big day. In addition to the Science Carnival and various author lectures, Sister Cities Park Café will be a hub of activity. Starting bright and early is author Paul Halpren, who'll speak to his latest work, Collider: The Search for the World's Smallest Particles. After that, a talk that looks at how to keep the Zoo afloat to be followed by a lecture defending the merits of standard research.

Sat., April 21, 11 a.m., Sister Cities Park Cafe, 18th & Race streets, philasciencefestival.org.
