TONIGHT: Maps and Atlases @ First Unitarian Church

(Nathan Gilmour)

Over the past few years, Maps and Atlases have mellowed their math-prog sound to a more accessible pop-oriented variety of acoustic indie weirdness. Trading a bit of their Mars Volta for a touch of Of Montreal, they're still no Simon and Garfunkle but your mom might enjoy their poetic and increasingly melodic vocals in distraction from their complex rhythmic structures.

The ridiculously shaggy Dave Davison’s voice can resemble that of a strained-note-reaching Peter Gabriel (a la Salsbury Hill), sometimes having a TV on the Radio feel. Previously performing at the Troc with Ra-Ra Riot in 2009, these freak-folks have been making good at SXSW and touring with Rx Bandits, Portugal the Man, Minus The Bear, and other popular off-center acts.

Tonight, 8 p.m., $12,  First Unitarian Church, 2125 Chestnut St., r5productions.com.
