B-day toast not left on Poe's grave

"Baltimore, you forgot my birthday?
I feel like Molly Ringwald in Sixteen Candles,
but with no promise of Jake Ryan."

Ever year on Edgar Allan Poe's birthday — that would be today, January 19 — some random Baltimore-ian leaves a birthday offering of a bottle of cognac and roses on the author's original grave site. But, as the Baltimore Sun reports:

This is the first time since Jan. 19, 1949 that the person, whose identity is unknown, failed to arrive, said Jeff Jerome, curator of the Edgar Allan Poe House.

"I was very annoyed," he said.

Ahem, is Baltimore losing their Poe touch?

To Poe's descendants: Philadelphians would be more than happy to give Poe'boy his birthday offering but cognac is on the expensive side. Think he'd be cool with a Lager?

Suck it, Charm City. Give us back our Poe!

Did it occur to anyone that the person who has been leaving gifts for sixty years might have DIED? Seems pretty likely. Maybe instead of being annoyed, someone in Baltimore should step up and start a new tradition. And maybe Philly should not be bitching about the fact that some poor old man or woman died this year.

Please, don't start a new tradition! If this tradition has ended please let it die a peaceful death. Any imitation would be just that...a pale imitation.

You know, Philadelphia will never get over the fact that Poe and Baltimore belong to each other. Bitch, bitch, bitch! Wah! Wah!

Maybe the Poe Toaster ended his tradition because he saw what a terrific job Baltimore has been doing to honor Poe since 1875. Maybe he saw all the Poe Bicentennial events that Baltimore did (all were sold out) and decided it was time to retire.

I went to Philadelphia once...almost slipped on all the grease on the sidewalks! I could never understand why a grease laden sub with fake steak on it was something a city would boast about.

We have Poe and he's not going anywhere. Get used to it.
