Charlatans UK drummer collapses at Johnny Brenda's

Last night at Johnny Brenda's, just after starting the fourth song of the set, Charlatans UK drummer Jon Brookes collapsed behind his kit. An audience member reports that lead singer Tim Burgess asked the crowd for a quick break as he and the other band members checked on Brookes' condition. Finding that he had stopped breathing, the band's manager asked if there was a doctor in the audience, and one came to the stage to assist. As the house lights came on, the attendees were asked to leave the building as paramedics arrived.

A statement on the band's website was posted this morning, stating:

Brookes was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Philadelphia and during the night was given a CAT scan and has been responding well to treatment. He has now been transferred to a larger hospital in the city for further tests, although his condition is said to be improving and doctors believe there will be no long term effects on his health.

The band, who were scheduled to perform a string of shows in Canada starting tonight, have asked fans to refer to their website for information on future gigs.
