The crowd that turned out early out early to the Euros Child show to catch kiwi indie rock legend David Kilgour wasn't huge, but it was dedicated and certainly appreciative. Kilgour, in the late ’70s/early ’80s with brother Hamish and Robert Scott, formed that seminal of all seminal New Zealand bands, the Clean. A tall, reserved figure in T-shirt, jeans and an army cap adorned with a red star, Kilgour looked at times as if he'd be more comfortable performing behind his amps as he led a four-man backing band through a set of his solo work. His rig included a bed of pedals and two microphones (one hooked up to an effects pedal of its own). I'll be honest and say I can't really tell you the names of the songs he played (I just don't tend to remember his song titles for some reason), but eveything Kilgour and company played, including selections from his new and gorgeous The Far Now (Merge), was kissed with that trademark New Zealand shimmer that inexplicably and gloriously devolves into layers of guitar feedback and mossily plucked solos. The mixture of understated, clean-channel guitar pop with a deviant streak towards cacophony is something that, for whatever reason, the South Islanders have always had over the rest of the world. And if you missed it last night, you should keep your ears peeled, as I heard tell from this guy last night that there might be some sort of Clean reunion in New York at the end of the month.
