JUST DO IT: Haikus and puppetry tonight

Not only did haiku master Nick Virgilio find shades of inspiration in the "old upright Remington" and "the town barberpole," but he did so right across the river in Camden. Tonight, "Nick of Time," a new play about Virgilio written by Joe Papryzcki, will debut at the Centre Theater in Norristown at 8 p.m. As part of the Independent Voices Festival, "Nick" will look into the syllables and stories that shaped this local poet, and even call upon the help of heavy weight Walt Whitman. The one-hour performance will only be running tonight and tomorrow night. But, if you hit up the show tonight, you can also catch Temple's Seventh Inning Stretch Puppet Company. They'll be performing two new adult puppet pieces after the show: the first deals with the age-old trope of a puppet king choosing an heir, while the second, "The Desert," looks to Native American myths to find answers to "all the spiritual hubbub," as puppeteer Michael Bee put it.
