New York-based performance artist Cynthia Berkshire is coming to Philly for a weekend of female body image exploration. The main component is the the three-years-in-the-making performance piece, "IRIS Prepares for Her Date," that features Berkshire getting ready for a rendezvous with a suitor, commenting on female self-expression and the male gaze. To accompany Berkshire's piece, Philadelphia's Magic Gardens is also presenting a one-day installation by artist Ana Vizcarra, who uses images of women throughout history; guests walk through and view the work via candlelight.
Berkshire's weekend doesn't end there, though: The Institute of Contemporary Art will host a workshop led by Berkshire on Saturday, where she'll use performance techniques to get participants thinking about female body image.
Performance, Fri., Jul. 16, 8:30 p.m., $10, Philadelphia's Magic Gardens, 1020 South St., 215-733-0390, phillymagicgardens.org; Workshop, Sat., Jul. 17, 2 p.m., $15, 118 S. 36th St., 215-898-7108, icaphilla.org.
