LOL WITH IT: Local podcasters aim high with Super Crappy Funtime

Super Crappy Funtime (SCFT) is a podcast hosted by Philadelphia comedians Dan Scully and Kevin Lau. Like most of our local comedy podcasts, it's just two comedians talking about stuff. No gimmicks. No shtick. It’s just two laidback funny guys tackling big issues, like pop culture, local comedy and other weekly podcasts. (They often have guest comedians from the Philly scene.) Recently, Dan and Kevin sat down with us to talk all things crappy and fun.

Super Crappy Funtime hosts Ron Scully (front) and Dan Lau.

City Paper: How did you guys get started?

Dan Scully: Podcasting always seemed like a fun, low-effort way to essentially "get more stage time." I had toyed with the idea of starting one, but didn’t have the technological know-how to do IT. Kevin had the geek cred, so we just started winging it and, before long, fell into a great rhythm.

Kevin Lau: I used to have a podcast before I started comedy in Philly, but the idea of SCFT stems from Dan and [Philly Comic] Dan Eastman wanting to do a podcast that I was going to produce. Then I dropped out of the comedy scene because I didn't love what I was doing and I wasn't sure if it was for me. On my time off, all I could do was think about comedy and what current life experiences I could turn into a joke. So one day I texted Scully from a Barnes and Noble to ask if he was still interested in doing it and he said "Fuck Yeah!"

CP: Has SCFT affected your craft outside of the podcast?

DS: Forcing myself to follow a schedule, and to record podcasts even when I'm not in the mood has curtailed my lack of discipline. Speaking in hourlong intervals about minutiae has helped cut the fat out of my comedic voice. Also, between promoting the show and scouting guests, I've become more active in the scene and have made important friendships and connections with other comics.

KL: Having a weekly show has definitely been good, because [it forces me to meet] deadlines. Artists, especially comics, are the laziest people you can ever come across and I am no different, but I am better about now because I don't want Dan mad at me.

CP: Who would you most like to have on the show?

DS: I'd like to get Mel Gibson and Danny Glover to come into the studio for an interview, and I'd [interview] them like were Riggs and Murtaugh from Lethal Weapon. I am confident they would fall back into their flawless comedic banter, and it would likely result in a series reboot, of which I am very supportive.

KL: At first I was gonna say Gaga just because she has so many fans and right now all I'm interested is getting attention for the show. However, I think it would be awesome if we could get Chris Brown. I would love to see the interaction between him and Dan, since Brown is Dan's arch nemesis. I wouldn't want to have a comedian or actor that I loved on the show because I don't want to come off as a gushing fan boy. If I am around somebody I like too much I'm gonna give off that stalker vibe.

CP: What sets SCFT apart from other Philly comedy podcasts?

DS: Regularity. We have committed to a weekly episode regardless of whether or not we've obtained a guest or prepared content. While quality of content is important, it's imperative that we consistently produce something. Podcast listeners have their favorites, but if they tune in on a Thursday and find that a new episode hasn't been released, we must assume they'll move on to something else and potentially take their subscription with them.

CP: You guys are nominated for "Best Podcast" at the annual WitOut Awards for Philly comedy in January. You've also been nominated for the satirical "WitIn Awards" for "Worst Podcast." Do you feel you deserve either? Both?

DS: We just want your love, and we'll take it in any form. We've certainly worked hard enough to earn a WitOut award, but not so hard as to preclude us from a WitIn award. I'm going to drive the world nuts with braggadocio if we're fortunate enough to win either, I can promise you that.

CP: What does the future have in store for SCFT?

DS: I just want people to listen. I hope to have enough listeners one day to overhear somebody talking about our show. My goal is to have any comics that are currently in or passing through our great city to feel comfortable promoting through our show, and having an entertaining conversation in the process.

KL: In the immediate future I just see the show growing and hopefully becoming a vehicle for comics to get some exposure. Hopefully, we'll start getting some C-list guests for a phone interview or two and then ... Total podcast domination!
