NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH: Trannies, fruit flies and preaching true fashion in the Gayborhood

For their last outing as Neighborhood Watchers, Josh and Julia decided to do it up right in the Gayborhood, where you'll always be sure to find gays, girls and, if you're lucky, a truckload of trannies. Where else but Hooters and a business in the Gayborhood would this be required attire? Dantasia R. (30), a server at Q Bar & Lounge (1234 Locust St., 215-732-1800), models his cocktail hour uniform made up of short shorts, tube socks and a black shirt. To make it his own, however, he pops on a few extra elements like his signature piece and current obsession: the teal circle scarf from American Apparel. Faster than a speeding gay bullet, he showed us several ways the scarf could be worn. Here he rocks an Edie Beale-inspired head wrap. You better work. Photos | Josh Middleton and Julia West Sara L. (23) almost didn't wear this dress because her gay friend told her it looked like someone swallowed triangles and finger paint and barfed all over her. While we usually believe gays have a leg up when it comes to fashion, we think this fruit fly made the right choice with this figure-flattering vintage dress from a shop in Astoria, N.Y. We also dig the way she enhances the red regurgitated triangles by accessorizing with like-colored flats and clutch. When looking for clothes she says she usually opts for pieces from the '50s and '60s because that was a generation that knew how to dress a girl with hips. We give her an 'A' for Ass-a-licious. Though she's wearing one around her neck, Shaya K. (21) doesn't need a bejeweled key to unlock her inner man-eater. She was all set to go clubbing with a bag full of everything she'll need for the evening: blush (aka "emergency eye shadow"), lip gloss (because she never leaves home without it) and a lifetime supply of body glitter. "Glitter brings out a lot in people," she says, "like confidence and glamour." This glamour puss says Lil' Kim inspired the red hot number she decided to slip into that evening. Spice it up, sex kitten! If anyone has the chops to be a supermodel it's 6-foot-tall Victoria B. (20). In fact, she is a working runway, catalog and swimsuit model. She says she looks to current fashion icon Chanel Iman for fashion inspiration because they possess many similarities. To her, deciding what to wear is an outlet for personal empowerment. "With fashion it's basically your own unique style, bringing it to life and not worrying what anyone else thinks about it," Victoria says. You better preach it, honey child.
