In Memoriam
The singer died today. He was 66. Here he is with Mickey Dolenz and Peter Tork on an old Philly show called Check it Out! in 1986, when the Monkees were doing a comeback (without Michael Nesmith).
One of my very dearest old friends, Tim Bowen, passed away on Monday. Bowen was an integral part of the Philly punk and painterly arts scene since the days of the Hot Club (he worked there, his Boneheads played there and opened for the likes of the B-52s) and Bar Noir, which he helped build and book. Tim made a fleeting few sharply sardonic albums (with the Crystal Ball Breakers) that were often as cutting as his socially critical paintings. He opened and closed his own gallery on Fourth Street, Falling Cow.

Time to honor another pioneer of the Folksong Society and Folk Festival, Stretch Pyott. He was a jovial man, always ready with a joke. Gene Shay, noted for some of the worst groaners ever foisted on music lovers for the sake of stalling during set change at the festival, recalls that Stretch would bug him to collect those bad puns into a book to sell at the festival, "You'll make a lot of money!" was the constant jibe.
"Now," says Gene, "If I ever do write that book, it will be dedicated to his memory."
Reflecting some more, "He and his wife [Teresa] were good friends of folk song, folk dance and folk tales." Caryl P. Weiss who formerly performed with Teresa in several groups, wrote a private email ennumerating some of the fun Stretch created — among the earliest concerts at Penn's Landing, on the deck of the Gazella Primera. Others state he was a father of the old time music scene. Stretch served on the board of the Folksong Society for years, several of them as president. His personal warmth naturally drew others to participate in all his volunteer activities.
As published in Inky:

Sad to hear that Beth Case of She-Haw passed away. Back in the ’90s, Case, Amy Pickard and a friends used to put on some rollicking good shows, a mix of Appalachian folk, country charm and footstomping rock. And the banter between best buds Case and Pickard was second to none. First time I remember hearing about them was when Brian Howard wrote about their show at a Whole foods back in ’98:
Their most striking number is the Stan Jones-penned "Ghost Riders In The Sky": Pickard sings the eerie lead over Case's dust-blown ghost howls.
"We definitely have a rapport…" says Pickard.
"An easiness…" interrupts Case.
"It's a sisterly thing," continues Pickard. "We like to keep it open, keep it fun. We bicker on stage, but we always kiss after the show… not a French kiss or anything, though."
Today, Joey Sweeney at Philebrity helped put She-Haw into context, recalling Philadelphia's alt-country past:
And in addition to having a fan base that stretched both outside their chosen genre and all the way to the UK, She-Haw also bore the (all-too) unique distinction of being a female act in a scene dominated almost entirely by dudes in flannel shirts, and handled it with class, distinction and aplomb.
It's true. She-Haw had a reunion show last year, which I believe turned out to be their last show. All my love to Amy and the extended She-Haw family.
In case you don't remember, Sunday marks the 10th anniversary of 9/11. To help you get your commemoration on, our interns have compiled a list of Philly memorial events with an artsy twist.
✚ Jesus, Bombs and Ice Cream by Meg Augustin
What do terrorism, welding and ice cream have in common? Not much, but when combined they offer a surprising perspective on the ten years since 9/11. Philly author and activist Shane Claiborne is teaming up with Ben and Jerry's Ben Cohen (pictured) for a presentation of excess militarism in America. “Jesus, Bombs, and Ice Cream” is a 90-minute variety show featuring a world champion juggler, testimony from an Iraq war veteran, a live mural creation, a welder who will turn a AK47 into a bowline, live music and a Internet presentation with Afghan youth working for peace. If that isn’t enough, an all-you-can-eat ice cream-a-thon will follow the whole shebang.
Sept. 10, 7 p.m., $10-$20, World Café Live, 3025 Walnut St., jesusbombsandicecream.eventbrite.com.

✚ Family Jam: 9/11 Memory Tiles by Cassie Owens
Ever since 9/11/01, the Philadelphia Magic Gardens’ (PMG) Isaiah Zagar has created tiles in remembrance. For this event, the PMG is inviting families to take a tour of Zagar’s memory tiles and make their own. Visitors will be given self-hardening clay to make impressions of their own design, and take their new creations home at the end of the afternoon. Younger participants who did not witness 9/11 will be able to use any event that has truly affected them as inspiration.
Sat., Sept. 11, noon-4 p.m., free with museum admission, Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens, 1020 South St., 215-733-0390, phillymagicgardens.org.
Sad to hear that Mikey Wild, "the Mayor of South Street," passed away this morning. Sara Sherr wrote about him in City Paper back in 1998. The guy was punk before any of us were, and one of Philly's all-time-best colorful characters. There's a movement brewing to have a mural put up on South Street. His good friend and bandmate Ed Wilcox's 1997 documentary will spell it out for you just what we've lost. (Start with part one below.) Rest in peace, Mikey.
Acclaimed singer/songwriter Phoebe Snow, who you may have heard on your dad's favorite oldies station as a kid, passed away in Edison, N.J. today at the age of 58. Her multi-octave-range voice gained national attention in 1974 with the song "Poetry Man," which you can see below. And for more on the singer's story, check out this article from the Los Angeles Times.
Sad to hear Poly Styrene — powerhouse lead singer of British punk band X-Ray Spex — died yesterday. Here's the Guardian's story.
