New York-based performance artist Cynthia Berkshire is coming to Philly for a weekend of female body image exploration. The main component is the the three-years-in-the-making performance piece, "IRIS Prepares for Her Date," that features Berkshire getting ready for a rendezvous with a suitor, commenting on female self-expression and the male gaze. To accompany Berkshire's piece, Philadelphia's Magic Gardens is also presenting a one-day installation by artist Ana Vizcarra, who uses images of women throughout history; guests walk through and view the work via candlelight.
Berkshire's weekend doesn't end there, though: The Institute of Contemporary Art will host a workshop led by Berkshire on Saturday, where she'll use performance techniques to get participants thinking about female body image.
Performance, Fri., Jul. 16, 8:30 p.m., $10, Philadelphia's Magic Gardens, 1020 South St., 215-733-0390, phillymagicgardens.org; Workshop, Sat., Jul. 17, 2 p.m., $15, 118 S. 36th St., 215-898-7108, icaphilla.org.

Lenny Seidman and Thomas Wave will perform on the tabla and sitar
Welcome summer with Isaiah Zagar and co. at Philadelphia's Magic Gardens third annual Summer Solstice. Don't forget your creativity because you will have the chance to make and bring home creations of your own. This year's theme is Once Upon a Tile, and will feature wide spectrum of performers, from Fred the Magician to barbershop quartet Frank the Dog. The event kicks off with music and 2 p.m., followed by dancing and craft making. Are you a devoted Solstice attendee? Gallery Manager Laura Foxx says this year differs from last year because there will be a block party component, involving art and food vendors surrounding the Magic Gardens. So you'll get to browse goodies — both edible and visual — while getting your groove on. Representatives from Buttercream Cupcakes, Renaissance Sausage, Sugar Philly and Honest Tom's Tacos will be waiting for you to have a taste. Feel free to bring your own booze but Fergie's Pub and ROOT will be serving to the over 21-year-olds at 6 p.m.
Sat., June 26, 1-10 p.m., $5-$10, Philadelphia's Magic Gardens, 1020 South St., 215-733-0390, phillymagicgardens.org.

Shakespeare's classic tale just can't get any more romantic than this: Pennsylvania Ballet is performing Romeo & Juliet this weekend, accompanied by stirring music and compelling performances by dancers with plenty of chemistry. Set to Sergei Prokofiev's famous score, choreographer John Cranko explores new dimensions of the well-known tragedy through the agility and tenderness of an accomplished ensemble. For added "aw," a husband-and-wife dancing duo (PA Ballet principals Zachary Hench and Julie Diana) are playing the star-crossed title characters. Performances begin Fri., June 4, at the Academy of Music and run for only a week (pick up next week's City Paper to read Janet Anderson's review), so grab your tickets quick, and your tissues quicker, before this ephemeral production vanishes. Romeo & Juliet, June 4-12, $24-$129, Academy of Music, Broad and Locust streets, 215-893-1999, paballet.org.

The header on Puppet Uprising's Web site right now — Five Acts * Five Companies * Five Desserts * One Play — is enough to pique our interest. But it's the secret part that really sends our drama-club hearts aflutter.

Here's the deal: At 8 p.m. tonight through Monday (that's the Ides of March, hint hint), get yourself gussied up and head to the Broad-and-Vine subway stop, and make sure you're wearing a red carnation so the folks running the show (Missoula Oblongata and Puppet Uprising) know who you are. They'll lead you to an undisclosed location for a night of snacks (we're hearing rumors of hot toddies and cupcakes) and theater (this year's production, in case you hadn't guessed, is Julius Caesar).

As that headline suggests, five companies are joining forces for this five-act endeavor — including Philly's own Green Chair Dance Group, Puppetyranny and Fence Kitchen. Did we mention that an emperor-size party's scheduled for closing night? Did we mention the hot toddies?

Missoula and the Uprising have been at this DIY theater game for years, presenting The Tempest in 2008 and King Lear in '09; tickets ($20 ahead of time; $25 at the door) have been known to sell out, so buy yours now. And don't forget that carnation.

Through Mon., March 15, 8 p.m., $20-$25, Broad and Vine streets, puppetuprising.org, themissoulaoblongata.com.
