Have you seen the trailer for M. Night Shyamalan's After Earth? The sci-fi flick, slated to come out June 7, stars Will Smith and his mini-me Jaden as a space general and his son who take the spaceship out for a father-son outing and crash-land on a post-apocalyptic Earth.

Looks pretty cool if you can get past the Smith-family overload. I just keep waiting for little Willow to pop out of a bush and whip her hair back and forth or something.

It looks like comic book heroes are as recyclable as cinematic cardboard. We recently had an X-Men reboot. Batman's having a more successful run under Chris Nolan's direction. And who can forget the awkward back-to-back Hulk features from the mid-aughts?

The Amazing Spider-Man, set for release in 2012, stars Andrew Garfield (dude from Social Network who got screwed in the merger) as Spidey, Emma Stone (Superbad) as Gwen Stacey, Denis Leary as George Stacey, Martin Sheen as Ben Parker and Sally Field as May Parker.

Oh, and the real star: 3-D glasses, baby! Spidey's gonna be swinging through the theater like a Broadway musical (except with fewer injuries).

Merry Christmas Eve, celebrators of Christian holidays! On this momentous day-before-the-big-day, we'd like to take a second from your holiday-glee fest to bring you the trailer for Hanna, set to come out in Philly on April 8, 2011. Saoirse Ronan (The Lovely Bones), in the title role, plays a Jungle Book-meets-Salt-style mini-warrior who throws the feds (Cate Blanchett!) off her dad's (Eric Bana!) trail by acting all sweet and innocent and then killing the shit out of everybody. Behold:
Now go drink some egg nog.

Guess which one's the alien!
The trailer for the ridiculous-looking I Am Number Four (Feb. 18, 2011), based on a sci-fi book co-written by expert maker-upper James Frey and directed by Disturbia's D.J. Caruso, just dropped so we thought we'd share it with y'all. It's a story about a handsome young human-looking alien (Alex Pettyfer, who was born in 1990! We're old) who's being hunted down by some evil dudes from his home planet, so he hides in the Midwest and falls in love with Quinn from Glee (Dianna Argon, born in a more reasonable 1986). We're not sure what Timothy Olyphant has to do with anything, but he's in it, too.

Timothy Olyphant plays the "mentor" role, who trains the hero. It's worth it to read the book this is based on, btw. Solid read.

Remember when everyone was all like, "OMReeseWitherspoonOwenWilsonPaulRuddJackNicholson!" This is why. How Do You Know, in theaters December 17, looks like your average James L. Brooksian-comedy — family drama, love, loss, a couple sight gags and lots of heart — that can be either insta-classics (Broadcast News, Terms of Endearment) or can kind of suck (Spanglish, I'll Do Anything). So really the only thing we learn from this trailer — featuring Reese Witherspoon as an ex-softball player who must choose between Washington National Owen Wilson or indicted, unemployed businessman Paul Rudd — is that a) Delancey Street can look like both New York City and Washington, D.C., b) Reese Witherspoon will probably end up with Paul Rudd in the end and c) James Brooks hates proper punctuation. But hey! Look! It's Herc! RELATED >> James L. Brooks' Philly-shot movie has a title, release date

When it was announced that Michel Gondry would helm the new Green Hornet movie, written by BFFs Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg and starring Rogen, I had a small fit. I saw this potential combo of Iron Man-like wit backed by a director with strong visual credentials, led by an affable persona who never came off as better than thou (RDJ's Tony Stark), perpetually pre-pubescent (Tobey Maguire's Spiderman) or in serious need of a good therapist — not to mention a Ricola (Christian Bale's Batman). In short, it would be something different. But looking at the first trailer for the would-be epic collabo only leaves me downtrodden. Where is the Gondry touch? The puffs of green smoke that emits from the gas gun has Gondry cartoonality, but otherwise, this is just another big budget movie with needless arthouse credentials (call it the Finding Forrester of the comic book genre). But what if this is just Sony's way of reassuring the American public that they didn't just dump millions of dollars into something that deviates from the norm? The Green Hornet was supposed to come out during the Christmas dollars rush, but was pushed to the January wasteland, which doesn't bode well for anyone involved (including us) but I've held onto the notion that studio execs are more interested in ducats then creative expression. And I'm going to continue to hold on to the notion that this travel is a clever rouse to distract us from what's really going on: a truly awesome movie.

"We've got beer over here!"

So who else is pumped for August 27?

Fun fact: The original 1978 Piranha, directed by Joe Dante and produced by the great Roger Corman, contains one of my favorite lines from all of movie history. A TV reporter on the scene of yet another vicious piranha attack looks into the camera and says, "Terror, horror, death. Film at eleven."
