Party

The Mad Decent Block Party used to be just like an actual Philly block party, with a real neighborhood vibe, and cookouts and forties out the yang. The past few, however, have been decidedly different, morphing into a soulless ravehead-,dupstep-, ecstasy-soaked marathon.

A couple hours into this year's event, however, it became apparent that this year's bash would take a few hints from the good ol' days of yore: Dance-offs and booze were shared, cigarettes were bummed and lifelong (or 20-minute) friendships were formed. It was a good day.

Oh, yeah, Diplo even got in a giant hamster ball and rolled around in the crowd.

Last night's Punk Rock Prom, at the Barbary's upstairs bar, Barbarella, drew a modest crowd of punk-rock enthusiasts, who came out in their finest glam gear to dance to New Radio's lady DJs Emily, Avalon and Ally, plus a smattering of guest turntablists. This "regular prom ... for punks," of course, showcased "all punk rock, all night."

Click on the drag queens' names for a video of performances by Diana Dharling, Brittany Lynn and The Goddess Isis, who did my favorite performance of the night, Lady Gaga's "Scheiße."

Just a reminder: Tonight we're hosting a drag party at Woody's (202 S. 13th St.) in the Gayborhood to commemorate the release of our annual Summer Fun Guide. There'll be legs, fake tits and lip syncing galore. You don't want to miss that, right?

We're arriving around 9 p.m. for drinks and mingling, then, at 10 p.m., we're heading upstairs where Brittany Lynn will host a drag show starring three of her fellow cover girls: Diana Dharling, Navaya Shay and The Goddess Isis.

After that, we're thinking about jaunting around the corner to Tabu Lounge (200 S. 12th St.) to put on a performance of our own. Sara Sherr will be there hosting a Morrissey Birthday- and British-themed karaoke night.

It'll be a whirlwind summer evening. Hope to see you there!

Well, it looks like that old preacher dude was wrong: The world didn't end on Saturday. So unless he was just off by a few days, that means we'll be able to enjoy another summer in Philadelphia. To get it started, we're releasing our jam-packed Ultimate Summer Fun guide with a bash at Woody's in the Gayborhood. To help us celebrate, five bootylicious drag queens — Navaya Shay, Omyra Lynn, The Goddess Isis, Brittany Lynn and Diana Dharling — will perform one of their signature numbers and mingle with the crowd as we sip on bevvies and talk about all the summertime fun we're about to have. Here are the deets:

Thu., May 26, 9 p.m., show at 10 p.m., free, Woody's, 202 S. 13th St., 215-545-1893, woodysbar.com.

See you there? Hope so!

I don't wanna ill, I just wanna chill...

"...and keep my hand around a hundra dolla bill"

I just got in a few hours ago, but can't sleep, so why not post this up now at 4:07am? Tonight, I was one of many bodies that packed intimate Fluid to witness Large Professor, who is not just a DJ, but producer and responsible for discovering the lyrical genius known as Nas. Hard to believe he has been around for an estimated 18 years and this was his first time spinnin' in Philly. Large Pro took the shine playing old to new school, R&B to soul, and mainstream to underground cuts. Ones that I remember are Common's "The People" (that is currently my favorite album, so I was hype), 'White Lines" by Grandmaster Flash and Melle Mel, some song by Remy Ma, and ATCQ's "Find My Way". There were many more obviously, but hell...it's 4am and that is what I can recall. The club was packed, free vodka was flowing and everyone was gettin' down with the get down on the dancefloor, while some dudes held up the wall nodding their head and rhyming word for word with the tracks. I left still wanting to dance and listen to more of Large Pro, but I'm not 21 like I used to be and my party meter expires at 130am. Large Pro showed us how he does it worldwide, which was returned by Philly showing him how we can rock a party and rock it right. Oh and, much respect to DJ Ultraviolet for hooking the event up for her Living Legends series. Spinderella is on the decks next month!
