To-Do List

We always get a ton of stuff that doesn't make it into the official agenda for one reason or another. Or sometimes it does! Anyway, this is some of the stuff that CP staffers are attempting to get to this weekend their own selves. You have no excuse for boredom.

FRIDAY 5/3

SATURDAY 5/4

  • Maybe you're sick of hearing about Lentil (this week's CP cover story subject) and maybe you don't want anything to do with the multi-day festival that carries his name, but you've gotta admit that the related event happening at The Fire has a respectable line-up (Mike Slomo Brenner will be playing, people).
  • Not only is the Franklin Institute screening Upstream Color it's opening a new espionage exhibition meaning we might spend most of our weekend there. On display: Insectothopter (an insect-sized intelligence-gathering device), the actual ice ax that was used to kill Leon Trotsky and other things to make us wish we worked for the CIA.
  • The Khyber Pass serves frozen mint juleps every day (that the slushy machine is working) but it's all preamble for their Kentucky Derby viewing party. Get drunk. Watch animals get spanked and run a race they don't know they're in.

SUNDAY 5/5

  • The Breeders at the Troc is all sold out.
  • Good seats are still available for the Shooting Wall film fest at PhilaMoca. Totally free.

FRIDAY 4/12

  • John Train's got a new non-concept album. See them play stuff from it during happy hour tonight @ Fergie's.
  • If you haven't heard Divers yet, get your ass to The Fire tonight.
  • The Making Time lineup tonight is pretty sweet: Delorean, Autre Ne Veut, Doldrums and Jacques Greene.

SATURDAY 4/13

  • The Manayunk StrEAT Festival isn't a typo — it's a hilly place where you can eat food.
  • The good people at Single Girl, Married Girl Records are celebrating a Winter Zine Relese @ Space 1026.
  • Passyunk Square's Second Saturday will be it's largest yet with music and all that good stuff, but we're going for Pollyodd's free strawberrycello cream samples and heaps of complimentary food.
  • Daisy Fried (judge of this year's poetry contest!) and Brian Teare (who judged it a couple years ago) and both reading as part of an afternoon double-bill juggernaut @ Penn Book Center.
  • The School of Rock curriculum starts off with the Ramones for beginners (they do really only use those three chords) and culminates in Zappa. Therefore, when The Ramones are on the bill of a School of Rock show, as they are at Johnny Brenda's tonight, you can generally expect to find really tiny kids doing their best Joey impression; the effect is really just fantastic.
SUNDAY 4/14
  • Because there weren't enough festivals this month, Subaru is putting on a cherry blossom fest. There's a 5k race for the athletic types, tea ceremonies and martial arts demos for Japan enthusiasts and a Prettiest Pet in Pink contest for the crazy cat ladies.
  • Snuff, gore, guts – when we think lazy Sunday we think back-to-back horror movie screenings (Cinedelphia Film Festival).
Passyunk Square's Second Saturday will be it's largest yet, with music and all that good stuff, but we're going for Pollyodd's free strawberrycello cream tasters and all of that complimentary food: samples: http://www.facebook.com/events/169509699868135/
Because Philly's cherry blossom trees are worth celebrating, there's going to be a 5k race for the athletic types and a Prettiest Pet in Pink contest for the crazy cat ladies: http://subarucherryblossom.org/sakura-sunday-schedule-events

FRIDAY 4/5

  • The large-scale, walk-through art installation Song of the Silken Mermaid at 2424 Studios. Plastic-sheeting caves: not as creepy here as they are on Dexter! (Fishtown)
  • On the verge of Fluid's closing, the final Sex Dwarf dance party will likely have end-of-the-world energy. (Queen Village)
  • Allison Weiss plays an early show at the Barbary tonight. Starts at 5:30 p.m., but there are five acts on the bill, so. (No Libs)
  • Some of us at CP have an illogical hatred of the new Dolphin (because we fear change!) but Juan MacLean is DJing there tonight. (Newbold)
  • Local rock band Restorations plays the Church. (Rittenhouse)
  • Tonight's the first night of the Empty Air project, in which you download an app and walk around Rittenhouse Square triggering different musical cues from the Mural and the Mint. (Rittenhouse)
  • Nothing Is Rather Do looks like a typo but it's a show at Space 1026. (Chinatown)
  • Two sister art events about copyright, the internet and piracy, TAKEN at Practice Gallery and REPEAT at Little Berlin. (Eraserhood, Kensington)

SATURDAY 4/6

  • It's supposed to be at least vaguely spring-like for Pilam's Human BBQ. (University City)
  • Yeah, it's really silly, but we have a soft spot for the really silly. Therefore: Giant Pillow Fight in Washington Square Park. (Society Hill)
  • Ex-City Paper staffer and esteemed poet Daisy Fried will read from her new book at Arts Parlor in the afternoon. (South Broad)
  • How about 24 straight hours of Indian music? Raga Samay is a rare occurance, people. (University City)
  • If you were not aware that there is a Stoogeum dedicated to the Three Stooges out in the 'burbs, there is, and it is this morning the curator is giving a presentation on Larry Fine as part of Cinedelphia (which has a lot of other cool stuff going on for its opening weekend). (Ambler)
  • Brother JT fronts the Original Sins at Johnny Brenda's. (No Libs)
  • And of course we will go to basically anything involving Skeletor and karaoke, ever. (Chinatown)

Hey, Philly feminists! If you’re looking to spend some time with like-minded ladies to learn about the process of making your own zine, clear your schedules for August 26 from noon to 5 p.m., when Philly Feminist Zine Fest debuts at the William Way Community Center (1315 Spruce St.) for an afternoon of workshops focused on the creation and content of zine production.

Classes will cover a broad range of topics, including how to use your writing as an outlet for anger, stress and grief, how to channel your creativity to be an ally to sex workers and how to utilize your zines in different, creative ways.

The event will double as a fundraiser for Project Safe, an outreach and support organization for Philly sex workers, and ActionAIDS will be there to provide free, rapid and confidential HIV-testing all afternoon.

For those interested in honing their photography skills, Project Basho (1036 Germantown Ave., 215-238-0928) has just announced their fall course schedule, and it includes everything from DSLR training to learning how to acquire long-term work as a photographer.

Experienced photogs interested in documentary work could check out “Digital Photography: Creating Long Term Projects,” a class convening multiple times over its three-month lifespan to help eager attendees build better projects and conquer the all-important hurdles of publication and distribution.

Foodies can get their learn on with “Plate to Lens: Food Photography,” a course designed to help shutterflys capture the most deliciously detailed food shots (like this beauty from our staff photog Neal Santos).

Also on the docket are two portraiture classes — “Portraiture with Natural Light” and “Intimate Portraits” — each aimed at improving the photographer’s work with living subjects. The latter course will be taught by Andrea Modica, current Drexel University professor of photography, who's well-known for her black and white portraits.

The sessions start late September. For more details, including schedules and pricing info, visit projectbasho.org.

This Thursday marks the first Baltimore Avenue Dollar Stroll of the summer, at which 42nd to 50th streets along Baltimore erupt into a bounty of $1 deals from a range of University City businesses. It all goes down at 5:30 p.m.

Lentil wraps from Dahlak, patch kits from Firehouse Bikes, craft beer from Dock Street Brewery, vegan cupcakes from Green Line Cafe and yoga coupons from Studio 34 are just a few of the options offered along the West Philly promedade — all for a single Washington each. Walkers can also purchase one dollar memberships to the University City Historical Society and Cedar Park Community Association as well as various raffle tickets and coupons. The streets will be filled with live music, a farmers market and various other rogue vendors looking to cash in on the festivities.

In addition to July 19, there will also be Dollar Strolls held on Aug. 19 and Sept. 20, from 5:30-8:30 p.m.

Every Wednesday, Chris Brown digs into our listings bin and pulls out a little something something to do every day of the week. This week? Bloomsday puppets, Dark Sisters and a make-your-own-Father's-Day-card sesh.

As the Rosenbach's annual Bloomsday festivities descend upon us, reacquaint (or perhaps introduce) yourself to Joyce's seminal classic with "Go Ulysses!". This performance by award-winning outfit Drama of Works features a band of puppets who know the story by heart. Wed., June 13, 6 p.m., $10, Rosenbach Museum & Library, 2008-2010 Delancey Place, 215-732-1600, rosenbach.org.

To sleep: perchance to read. The Dead Bards of Philadelphia welcome all ye with a penchant for poetry (or an old-fashioned love affair with a rivaling family) to come read your words or those of a favorite author. Join them tonight at their Open Poetry Night as they awaken Shakespeare’s ghost at The Spiral Bookcase (112 Cotton St.) at 8 p.m.

Each Wednesday, Chris Brown digs into our overflowing listings bin and pulls out a little something-something to do every day of the week.

When we chatted with The Heads of State a few months back, they didn't mention any work involving pianos but here we are. Along with other artists such as Justin Duerr and Terry Adkins, this bit of design whimsy gives us custom decorated pianos to be strategically placed throughout University City as part of the "Heart & Soul" project. At the opening reception tonight, make a move and tickle some ivory. Wed., June 6, 6 p.m., The Porch at 30th Street Station, universitycity.org.

OK, so technically in Nolan-verse it's never referred to as the Batmobile, but what else would you call a vehicle powered by the Batman? Today is your chance to take a gander as the Tumbler rolls through town as part of a blitz to drum up hype for the upcoming release of the Dark Knight Rises

Wed., May 30, 10 a.m., Wal-Mart, 2200 Wheatsheaf Lane, tumblertour.com.
