show was amazing. despite the band seeming listless to the point of collapse, the sounds they produced were thunderous (and doug eventually assumed an epileptic state during the solos). many thanks to citypaper for the tickets.

Erik Ransom and Leah Walton in Carrie
Arguably the most highly anticipated theater event of the season, Brat Productions' creeped-out, Stephen King-approved, drag-tastic Carrie is set to open on Wednesday. Let the bloodbath begin! Here's what our own king of creep, A.D. Amorosi, had to say about the show:
No one can stop Carrie's drag queen lead, Jersey's own viciously talented Erik Ransom, from essaying the tale of a flaxen-haired high-schooler who gets pranked, tamponed and bucketed — and then gets even in the campiest, goriest fashion. No one can halt the messiest-ever prom night since Prom Night. No one can slow the madness of religious zealotry versus good old growing pains. OK, extreme growing pains. Wide-eyed Ransom leads an all-star Philly cast (including Jess Conda, Leah Walton and Colleen Corcoran) through the spookiest stage vibes since Brat's Barrymore-nominated creepfest, Haunted Poe. Expect director Michael Alltop to bring the same weird passion to King's taunting teen masterpiece. "We had all this blood left over from Haunted Poe, and I could think of no better way to put it to use than by doing Carrie," says Alltop."I love the script, but it still amazes me that Stephen King approved it in the first place. The only thing I can figure out is that having Carrie played by a man in drag is actually closer to what he had in mind, visually, than what Sissy Spacek looked like in the movie." Bloody right.
To win a pair of tickets to the October 10, 7 p.m. performance, answer the following trivia question:

What actor, known best for his childhood role in a 1990s sitcom, starred in the 1999 Carrie sequel, The Rage: Carrie 2?

E-mail carolyn.huckabay@citypaper.net for a chance to win, and visit bratproductions.org for more information. [UPDATE, 2:20 p.m.]: Congratulations to CritMass reader Ben, who was first to send in the correct answer — the one, the only Zachery Ty Bryan of Home Improvement fame. Thanks for playing, y'all!

New Orleans-born hard bop trumpeter/composer Terence Blanchard has become the sound of Spike Lee Joints (he's scored every Lee film since Jungle Fever). So when Lee turned his gaze upon post-Katrina Nola for a 2006 HBO documentary, it was a no-brainer that Blanchard would be the man to score it. Some of that deeply personal music can be found on A Tale of God's Will (A Requiem for Katrina) [listen after the jump], music from which Blanchard will perform music from this Sunday, Oct. 3, 7 p.m., at the Annenberg Center's Zellerbach Theatre. We happen to have four pairs of tickets to give away. To win one, be among the first four to answer this question by noon tomorrow (10/1):

What was the name of Spike Lee's aforementioned HBO documentary on hurricane Katrina's aftermath?

E-mail your answer to bhoward@citypaper.net with the subject line "Blanchard Tix." The first four with the correct answer will be notified and will be able to pick up their tickets at City Paper's Old City offices by 4:00 Friday or at the Zellerbach Theatre the night of the show.

UPDATE: Congratulations to the winners of the Terence Blanchard tickets. The answer we were looking for was When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts but, due to some ambiguity in the question, we also accepted If God Is Willing and Da Creek Don't Rise, Lee's 2010 followup to When the Levees Broke. Enjoy the show and please report back on how it was.

Wanna go see London pretty-pop rock band The XX at the Merriam on Monday? Prove it! Write a haiku about the band. Best one gets a pair of tickets to the show. We'll pick a winner on Thursday. According to the band's publicist, this is the XX's last tour supporting their lovely self-titled debut album, and they won't be back for awhile. A big, majestic, seated theater sounds kinda perfect for a band like this. The XX plays Mon., Oct. 4, 8 p.m., $25-$33.50, with Warpaint and Zola Jesus, Merriam Theatre, 250 S. Broad St., keswicktheatre.com. WE HAVE A WINNER: Congrats, Mim!

This isn't our usual ticket giveaway situation. With this one you don't just see Australian rock band The Temper Trap play the Troc on Sunday, 9/26. You also get to meet them! And greet them! And, presumably, have an awkward photo taken with the band! Before the show!
This occasion does not call for our usual early comments/best haiku contest. No, no, no. You gotta work for this one. Here's the deal. Take the publicity shot from above (or download the hi rez version here) and photoshop/draw yourself into it. Send the results to pat @ citypaper.net by 4 p.m. EXTENDED TO FRIDAY, 10 a.m.!! Best two entries, as chosen by people who appreciate raw beauty, will win the tickets/meet-up thing. Get 'shopping!
