Femmes, step into your high heels and join the roadshow! This Friday, Philly’s anarchist and radical bookstore, Wooden Shoe, will host Beyond Visibility: Illuminating and Aligning Femmes. The free event will include “unplugged” performances of all types — puppetry, music, burlesque, spoken word — and several of Philly’s most famous femme-identified performers like Mesapotamia LeFae (pictured), Laura Rabbit, and The Notorious OMG. ScrewSmart's Rebecca Alvarez will also mediate a post-performance panel at which artists and audience members will have the chance to raise awareness and build community through lively discussion.

Beyond Visibility is part of a project that's traveling around the country to promote Baltimore's August 2012 Femme Conference, which will feature empowering lectures, panels, workshops and performances. For the past six years, the project has worked to unite femmes and allies by creating an open dialogue about gender, and to build a cohesive forum where identity can be celebrated and explored. Join the conversation (and the fun) for a night of femme-fabulous entertainment and bonding.

Fri., Jan. 20, 8 p.m., free, Wooden Shoe Books, 704 South St., 215-413-0999, woodenshoebooks.com.

Reporter Meg Augustin takes you inside some of Philly's most fab dwellings to showcase our city's unique grasp on design and architecture.

With the winter chill finally upon us, outdoor shopping might be the last thing on your mind. But the shops of Chestnut Hill — combining the cozy, boutique feel of suburban shopping with the walkable elements of city life — make it easy to crawl away from the TV to window shop for your favorite interior-design elements. This week, The Great Indoors is taking a look at some of our favorite home design shops on this section of Germantown Avenue.

Rising to rock star status in less than two years? I’ll take it. So, apparently, will indie-rock newcomers, Real Estate. In 2009, the band hit the ground running with the release of their self-titled debut album, which earned a No. 20 spot on Pitchfork's Top 50 Albums list. Since then, they’ve gone nowhere but up, touring with acts like Girls, Kurt Vile and Deerhunter, and in 2011, they signed with Domino to release their second album, Days. Hailing from New Jersey, the band has become known for a lo-fi, riding-the-beach-cruiser sound, and though they cite “The Boss” and New Jersey among their influences, they seem to have more of an L.A./Beach Boys thing going on. Their psychedelic, trip-rock penchant for reverb definitely wakes up The Zombies.

Man Cave is a testosterone-laden Monday feature that highlights the weekend haps of a pop culture-loving Philly dude.

Tim Tebow's expected (but disappointing) collapse at the hands of Tom Brady aside, this was one of the most exciting playoff weekends in recent memory. But I had to find ways to kill time before and after the big games. I swung over to Tecmo Super Bowl Heaven where I downloaded the roms that allowed me to play the football games of my Nintendo-oriented youth on my laptop. More importantly, it allowed me to play as the modern teams, which means there was some revisionist history for Tebow in my Man Cave. If you have an emulator for NES or SNES, you can download Tecmo rosters from just about any year, and — if you have a high-speed internet connection — you can challenge opponents online at puretecmo.com.

We also broke out the old RISK board for some savage world domination. I'm realizing that the key to winning a bigger game (four players or more) is this: You have to control Australia. Everybody's gonna be scrambling for domination of the mid-sized continents, which is gonna be a drain on their resources and may not pay-out at all (especially for Europe, with boarders like Swiss cheese). But nobody's gonna attempt to challenge your ownership of Australia, which means you're gonna have a few extra fresh troops coming in every round, minus the bloody border wars that your fellow players are hemorrhaging resources into (look at our defecit since we've been in Iraq). And since people rarely attempt to dominate the whole continent of Africa early in the game, you're usually left with some poorly defended countries to pilfer slowly as you build up RISK cards quietly off the radar. Wolf Blitzer hardly notices ya!
