Homeslice Bo Bliz unleashed a new mixtape, chronicling his fave moments from Jadakiss. Bo and BFF Emynd make up Crossfaded Bacon and are known for their Bounce parties, but you can catch them next on Fri., July 15 for So Special, with guest Willy Joy, at Silk City (435 Spring Garden St., 215-592-8838). Take it away B.B.:
I've done a few of these "best of" tapes, all to guys deserving of them, guys I kind of wanted to make "highlight reels" of their albums. Not necessarily because the albums weren't hot or solid or whatever, but just to put all real heat in one place. This Jadakiss is the same concept, and definitely something you can ride to this summer.
So jump on it people. Stream and tracklist after the jump, or head to the Crossfaded Bacon site for the DL link. RELATED >> DJ Jazzy Jeff and Mick Boogie hook you up with some free summer jams

Calling all history nerds: Tomorrow night at the National Constitution Center, Eran Shalev, author of Rome Reborn on Western Shores: Historical Imagination and the Creation of the American Public, will lead a conversation about how antiquity shaped the early American political landscape. Here's what University of Virginia's Peter Onuf had to say about the book:
Because of the way Americans thought about time and history, the ancient world loomed much larger in their minds — indeed was present in their lived experience — than previous writers have recognized. Rome Reborn enables us to take a fresh look at the history American Revolutionaries were making and living."
In anticipation of the talk (6:30 p.m., free with reservation, 525 Arch St., 215-409-6700, constitutioncenter.org), we're giving away a copy of this book, plus two tickets to the NCC's "Ancient Rome in America" exhibit, to the first reader who can correctly answer the following trivia question:

The painting pictured above is part of the NCC's "Ancient Rome" exhibit. What's the title of the painting?

E-mail your answers to carolyn.huckabay@citypaper.net for a chance to win.

On Friday, I hit you with an exclusive Icecube that Philly's Paul Green — you know, that guy who started the local School of Rock and then franchised a bunch more throughout the U.S. and Mexico — had just sold his SoR to someone bigger. We've got word the new owner is Sterling Investments, who happen to operate Sylvan Learning Centers, and paid out a check with a lot of commas to do so. WTF?! you say. It was no secret that Green had brought in Sterling as capital investors last year, but the extent of how involved they were and how it tore him apart, apparently, is only now coming to light. Oh, and Green left his own organization as of June 30. As a rumored condition of retention of naming rights, Green gave it all up on the 30th, leaving Sterling with the name School of Rock, which they will continue to call it for now. Supposedly, some longtime Green stalwarts were pushed out too. Days later, the same thing happened to one key Sterling Investment employee who did the pushing. Some old school Green peeps stayed and are running the local operations. Stay tuned for more.

The school has NOT been the same since Paul and his close associates left. The kids REALLY miss him.

BruceClaws Jersey.
Clearly, the greatest minor league baseball team to take the field is the Lakewood, NJ BlueClaws, a Phillies Single-A affiliates. Saturday marked the third year they have hosted a Bruce Springsteen tribute night. For one night only, they become the BruceClaws for no reason at all other than they happen to be in New Jersey and Springsteen fans will spend exorbitant amounts of money on anything Bruce-related (I speak from experience). Check out the sweet jerseys above, which are auctioned off after the game. WANT. The BruceClaws won, valiantly defeating the Delmarva Shorebirds in a 2-1 11-inning game. For those keeping score at home, Cheese won the Pork Roll, Egg and Cheese race set to "Hungry Heart." Bruce is definitely a baseball fan. The band had a softball team in the '80s called the E Street Kings and I know he's a diehard Bronx Bomber (sigh, nobody's perfect). But for the life of my I can only think of two Boss songs that reference baseball: "Glory Days" (clearly, along with the ridic video) and "The Angel" from Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ ("Baseball cards poked in his spokes, his boots in oil he's patiently soaked.") Am I missing any? Help me out in the comments. Then, of course, there's this...

Anonymous 2, I figure not, unless the Texas Rangers often play in Harlem ("The rangers had a homecoming in Harlem late last night"). But the idea definitely made me giggle.

Okay, Philly music heads — we're guessing your weekend schedule has a pretty sweet gap between noon and eight on Sunday, right? Of course there is. Who does anything on Sunday afternoon? And don't even suggest brunch. A better option is Gentrifest, a slammin' all-ages fest over at The M Room. We would have told you about it in the actual paper this week, except for, y'know, we didn't find out until Tuesday night when a poster on the Chestnut Street bridge caught our eye. A true cross-section of Philly's DIY musicians, Gentrifest showcases three hip-hop acts, three punk acts, and a Neutral Milk Hotel cover band. I know – crazy, right? Let's break it down after the jump. Semen Stains and the Mountaintops — Aforementioned NMH cover band. Jeff Magnum must have known that somebody, somewhere down the line, was going to make excellent use of his most awkward lyric. Guns on the Run — Hook-heavy punk reminiscent of the Bouncing Souls' Maniacal Laughter, with perhaps some early Alkaline Trio thrown in the mix. Warped Tour-ish, but in a good way. Fuck Attack — Aw man, abrasion. Shreddy throats and guitars. Think Stalag 13 and Equal Vision Records. Population Zero — Perhaps a meeting ground between the two camps, a la The Exploited. Ground Up — Hip hop trio dispensing laid-back ambiances and cut-happy backings that would do RJD2 proud. (RJ actually produced one of the tracks on their myspace.) Dumhi — We told you about Haj a couple weeks back; his originally-scheduled record release show for The Jungle had to be canned at the last minute, but he brings a DJ set and some friends to this show. 5 O'Clock Shadowboxers — Smart, swaggery hip hop from South Philadelphia, fronted by gravelly MC Zilla Rocca. Like Edan before them, the Shadowboxers' 2009 record The Slow Twilight mines rock-nerd touchstones, sampling The Velvet Underground's "Venus In Furs," Cat Power's "Free" and Espers' "Dead Queen" More info on the fest — including a parsing of its cheeky name, and many of those same links — over here. The fest is asking folks to bring canned food donations for Philadelphia Food Not Bombs. Pitch in and rock the fuck out.
Sun., July 11, noon-8 p.m., pay-what-you-will, The M Room, 15 W. Girard Ave.

If you caught Shopping Spree this week (or read the headline of this post), you already know what I'm about to tell you: The Piazza at Schmidts is launching its weekendlong Markets at the Piazza this weekend, and you, friends, are invited. Here's what Julia West had to say about the affair:
How is this different from the Piazza's flea market? Because this is an ongoing event, it provides a weekly space where local businesses can set up a shop, allowing online-only stores to entice passers-by without high rent constraints. More than 200 vendors will be hawking home goods, recycled items, crafts, cupcakes and antiques. And, of course, there will be fashion finds: Check out hair accessories from Lady Saint Couture, Philly Phaithful's sports apparel and ultra-swanky handbags from Elizabeth Bayu.
We asked a handful of this weekend's vendors to share a bit about themselves and send over a few photos from their product line; jump on over to take a look at their bios.

Sat.-Sun., July 10-11, noon-7 p.m., free, Piazza at Schmidts, 1101 N. Second St., atthepiazza.com.

PHILLY PHAITHFUL >> "Tired of throwing away his money on cheap tees, PhillyPhaithful President Dan Hershberg set out to create a line of shirts that felt great, looked great and appealed to the dyed-in-the-wool Philadelphia sports fan. Printing clever, whimsical and original designs on high-quality American Apparel blended cotton shirts, PhillyPhaithful appeals to those who live and breathe sports. If you find yourself wondering what Jayson Werth does in his down time or have erected a shrine to his beard, we're probably the guys for you."
SHOWROOM 77 >> "Angela Edmunds created Showroom77, Philadelphia's first wholesale/retail multi-label clothing and accessory showroom, in November of 2006. Showroom77 launched as the new division of the Sarai Style fashion department, servicing buyers and private clients."
VERVAIN SAVON >> "Vervain Savon is a natural soap and body care company focused on using the best that nature has to offer. We create the highest quality products using only natural ingredients. Vervain takes pride in the fact that all of our soaps and body care products contain only fair trade butters, sustainable oils and locally grown herbs and botanicals."
DANIEL DUFFY >> "Daniel Duffy is a local artist whose artwork has been approved by Major League Baseball, and is currently being sold at the Baseball Hall of Fame. The work is painstakingly handwritten with a patient hand. The Phillies posters are made from every game of the two Phillies championships, and the Kalas is made from his best calls and his Hall of Fame speech."
ELIZABETH BAYU >> "Elizabeth Bayu's jewelry is handcrafted with 14 karat gold fill and silver metals and features gemstones that symbolize good health, good luck and serenity. ... Many items are one-of-a-kind so you can enjoy wearing an exclusive piece."
DUKE & WINSTON >> "Duke & Winston is a Philadelphia-based men's casual clothing company launched in 2009 by Seun Olubodun and his English bulldog, HRH The Duke. The aim of the brand is to refine the innovative and fashion forward trends that come out of street-wear to produce casual apparel for a more discerning gentleman ... with some limited pieces for his lady."
RACK AND ROLL CLOTHING CO. >> "Mary Harvey's Rack and Roll carries fun, funky, affordable clothing that you can rack up and roll right into your living room, office, gym, bar, salon ... you name it. It's all about shopping and cocktails....it's a great girls' night out — or in!! And, as the hostess or shopping party organizer, you get 10 to 20 percent in free clothes."

Friday: Make the drive to Phoenixville, PA to scream like a madman (or woman) while sprinting out of a historic theater. Why, you might ask? The "Running Out Re-enactment" is just one of many programs lined up for this year's Blobfest, a celebration of the 1958 movie about an alien blob that terrorized a town. The "running-out" scene would become pretty famous, but not as famous as the film's break-out star, the legendary Steve McQueen. QFest started up yesterday so don't worry, you haven't missed much. We have so much coverage it hurts. Saturday: Start your morning gyrating. Get your head out of the gutter — you're headed to the free Hula-Hoop Class hosted by a Pop Fizz Burlesque instructor. Then head over to the Chestnut Hill Book Festival. The festival, which runs Friday through Sunday, features book readings, discussions and workshops with authors such as Gregory Frost and Tom Purdom. For a full schedule, click here. Sunday: You won't be exactly sure of what you'll watch when you catch an evening performance of the Koresh Artist Showcase. Still, you should check out Philadelphia artists as they provide their own take on art mediums such as theater and dance. Then give it up for hometown hero Kurt Vile, who takes the stage with N.J.'s oh-so-summery Real Estate.

Most Impressive I stopped by that Vader Project exhibit yesterday. That's the one we told you about, where artists like Crash, Ron English, Dalek and a ton of others take a Darth Vader mask and paint it and glue things to it. It was really excellent in an everybody's-turning-pop-DIY kinda way. I mean, some were kinda lo-concept, but a lot of the artists really went for it. It's free. It's air conditioned. Recommended. On view through today, July 9 (auction Sat., July 10, noon), free, Freeman's Auctioneers & Appraisers, 1808 Chestnut St., 215-563-9275, freemansauction.com.

The Philadelphia-based School of RockPaul Green's master class for kids who want to pose, slash, bang and solo like their heroes — is rumored to have sold its many locations to an as-yet-undisclosed national buyer for $10 million. That doesn't sound like a lot of money for the dream that Green started in 1998 and the keys to 30-plus School of Rocks from here to California and beyond. Not to mention the bitching bragging rights to the fact that Jack Black ripped Paul off. Stay tuned for more.

It was not sold, It was a large capital investment last year by a company that has a history of growing a company like the one Paul Green started from 50 schools to over 200.

The McDonald's of the music business is now part of Sylvan learning centers... Just wait for the $5 an hour freckled faced 18 year olds who've never played a real gig start teaching more and more 17 year olds around the country... yea...

MusicBiz - I don't really know what your comment means, but Sylvan Learning Center only hires certified teachers as tutors. Any "freckled faced 18 year olds" would be assistants who deliver materials to the teachers and reshelve them. Also, music has never been part of our curriculum.

Sylvan bought it late 08-early 09 but left Paul in place with certain responsibilities- including the All Stars but he stomped off in a huff Christmas 09. Rumour has it Paul is clean and sober now and actually took a crew to Zappanale this month.
