Anyone who loves Ice Cubes knows that I am a big fan of book signings. I'm certain to be camped out all week at the fifth annual Philadelphia Book Festival in April — and not just because I want to watch Tina Fey and Garrison Keillor in action. Sonia Lynn Sadler and Kadir Nelson will undoubtedly rock it like mo-fos. Anyway, two major book signing tours started in the area, each one a bigger doozy than the last. Jennifer "J Woww" Farley of Jersey Shore fame did her first book signing for The Rules According To J Woww: Shore-Tested Secrets on Landing a Mint Guy, Staying Fresh to Death, and Kicking the Competition to the Curb at Bookends in Ridgewood, N.J., where the only thing longer than the book's title was the crowd there to see her. "Men may be from Mars and women from Venus, but I'm from the Jersey Shore," writes J Woww. Oy. It's probably better than A Shore Thing by "Snooki" Polizzi but certainly not the masterpiece that Here's The Situation was. Saying. On Mar. 14, Farley's doing another signing at that bastion of literature, Tavern on Broad (200 S. Broad St.). Have the calamari while in the reading room.

The other first stop of a highly-anticipated national book tour was U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld who packed the National Constitution Center with tales from Known and Unknown, where talks about his four terms in Congress and having served under Presidents Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, and George W. Bush. Did you know that Bush wasn't an idiot? Me neither. But that's in Rummy's book. There might not be as much as you wanted to know about WMDs in his book, but then again he's got nothing to say in regard to the smushing or smackdowns in J Woww's tome. Go figger.

Miguel performing at Power 99 and Xfinity Performance Theater in Bala Cynwyd,
Last time I spoke with Stephen Starr we discussed his pairing with Aimee Olexy (coming in April to his former Washington Square space). Then he mentioned a few other upcoming projects, too. Like the fabulous haute food court/catering op/mixed use facility that he was doing with developer Eric Blumenfeld, Marc Vetri, and Joe Volpe at ye old Wilkie car dealership on N. Broad. Starr mentioned something about "end of year 2011" and then we started talking about the bank holiday roast at The Dandelion. Well, that end of year has become more like October as Blumenfeld held a news conference stating the food bar project at 600 N. Broad and its 100 apartments at 16th and Mount Vernon streets were forging ahead. That means Starr's New England-y seafood shack, Route 6, and Vetri's beer-centric Birerria 600 (along with a catering hall from Volpe the owner of No Libs' Cescaphe) will be ready by Autumn. Talking about the Cescaphe, its next big event will be the fourth annual John DeBella Golden Spoon Award where the mustachioed WMGK-FM host will gather 12 comfort-food-centric Philly cookers and 400 of his friends to see who homiest chef is. So farm names such as Nectar's Patrick Feury and Peter Woolsey from Bistrot La Minette are in. More next Ice. Can you teach old dogs new tricks? Ask John Gilmour. The howler from the later great metal marauding She-Males just formed a new band Acidfinger. "No drummer, just a DJ so it's half-club, half-glam rock," notes Gilmour who goes on to say the song he sent me to hear "Doctor Octopus" is actually a She-Male cover. So the dogs and tricks question? "I might be too lazy to write new material."

Joe Biden, obviously
Newly solo publicist Becca Lane (she just left Sharla Feldscher) nab her first cool account (Mad Dragon Records) and already she's got herself another gig: co-hosting the Most Dangerous Open Mic in Philly with mega-voiced songwriting/singer Hannah Zaic, starting on Valentine's Day, Feb. 14 at National Mechanics. To mark the occasion, not only will Zaic offer up a dinner date with Lane as part of the night's contest proceedings, Philly's most romantic new wave ensemble, Carter Norman's Kiss Kiss Kill will do its CD EP release. Not to be outdone, Kiss Kiss Kill's Eric Chocolate will screen his new short film Bed Bugs. "It has a Valentine's Day theme in that it's about a date gone awry."
Chef Marcey Blaine Turney
OK, chocolate and love, yes, it's Valentine's. So let me count the ways that I dig Marcie Turney. Sure the chef what owns all of 13th Street (Barbuzzo, Bindi, Lolita) will have date-night dinners. But on Feb. 13, her Verde gift shop hosts a give-away of a complimentary draught of Yard's Love Stout for shoppers. And what you'll want to buy most of all is Turney's artisanal Marcie Blaine Chocolates. I'm not usually the guy who goes for corny Philly themed food stuffs but the only thing better than staring at her Robert Indiana-themed LOVE choc is popping it in your mouth. If you'd rather not concern yourself with l'amour, you can try your damn-dest to get laid at Steven Ward's BEN-FM's seventh annual Mile of Meet (or Meat) on Feb. 11. The VH-1 Tough Love host from Philly will line up one mile's worth of eligible bachelors and bachelorettes in front of Manayunk Brewery & Restaurant at 4120 Main St. Finally, a reason to go to Manayunk again — the possibility of getting laid. WHOWHATWHERE: Emily Osment — the star of Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2 to say nothing of her dynamic range on the Hannah Montana series — graced The Whiting School with her presence. The school won a Q102-FM contest with its prize a performance from Osment, so yay them. Hip-hop impresario Russell Simmons — a man who will never find a hat that fits securely over his ears — hit 10 Arts over the weekend with a smoochy lady friend. Good on you, Russ. Two of the stars of I Am Number FourDianna Agron and Alex Pettyfer — hit Hot Topic in Paramus NJ the other day. This was crucial for two reasons. One, Agron is the best reason to watch Glee and she and the whole cast will be at Philly's Wells Fargo Center on sale for that Feb. 19 (comcasttix.com, 800-298-4200). Secondly, I needed new True Religion jeans. My pair with holes got more holes. If you don't love Enrique, Ricky or Marc A, you should've loved Miguel. He was performing at Power 99 and Xfinity Performance Theater in Bala Cynwyd before his big World Café Live gig that night. And Vice President Joe Biden told on-lookers that $53 billion for high-speed rail was a good idea in a lousy economy while Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood ducked — all during a visit to 30th Street Station Ex-LaColombe and Garces Restaurant Group coffee consultant Justin Manne just got a gig as the manager at 17 and Locust's The Coffee Bar. Make mine black and send me a plate of truffle-buttered popcorn and fennel spiced almonds Mathew Feldman's Lucky Old Souls jazz jawn atop Moonstone brings composer/pianist/organist Lucas Brown (of Bootsie Barnes' band) to the stage for his and his new quartet featuring trumpeter John Swana (that'd be the Lucas Brown Quartet) and saxophonist Wade Dean's sextet starring bassist Jason Fraticelli to the stage on S. 13th Street on Feb. 11. Tell me this isn't true: General Lafayette Inn, on Germantown Pike in Lafayette Hill — since 1732 yet — is on the market. We knew it closed but secretly we hoped it would re-open. It's going for under two million. A steal for its two acres — restaurant building, microbrewery, bed-and-breakfast, and all. WKDU-FM Eavesdrop Radio hosts and owners of the Record Breakin' label — Philly's own DJs Junior and lil' dave — celebrate five years of Breakin' Records — with a compilation to be found at recordbreakin.com. "The brightest highlight of the five years has been continuously being able to introduce amazing new artists to the world that push various musical boundaries while keeping a soulful foundation," says Junior. "I'm looking forward to many more years and truly appreciate all the continued support."

Other than his Burt Bacharach period, it's been a minute since Elvis Costello mattered. I'll tell you when it was – 1986/87. That's when he first brought the Spectacular Spinning Songbook to the fore like he's doing AGAIN this May 19 at the Tower (tix goes on sale Sat. Feb. 12). The Tower was where he made his last great stand as well, three nights of it, too. It was like October of 1986 and Costello had two bands going, one the rootsy sort of ensemble that he clammed together for his King of AmericaBlood & Chocolate album, the other, the Attractions with (unless I'm nuts, his then wife who used to play bass with the Pogues) that focused on their songs. Those nights were great, stark, dark and strange. You had already heard EC pull off country, with 1981's Almost Blue, so that was no big shake. It was elegant, though. The night with Blood & Chocolate seemed like a finale to his punk rock days, as if these shows would be the end of the hard stuff so he could gateway into what would be his (then) Tom Waits period. But the Spinning Songbook shows with the Attractions were amazing fun. A man in a tux went through the audience, nabbed a contestant and they'd spin the wheel hoping to hit one of Costello's favorite covers or one of the witty cuts from his already voluminous catalog. Tom Petty's "American Girl," Grandmaster Flash's "The Message," Prince's "Pop Life," and Gerry & the Pacemakers' "Ferry Cross the Mersey" were amongst the thrilling possibilities. After picking the song, the "contestant" could hop in a cage with a go-go dancer, watch a portable television or read a book near Costello on stage while the song played. Costello and Nick Lowe brought the same carnival schtick and wheel to U of P's Class of 1923 Skating Rink a year later. It didn't have the immediate thrill of newness but it was still brilliant — certainly better than Momofuku or Kojak Variety. At the Tower May 19, 8pm: WXPN Welcomes Elvis Costello and The Imposters. $65, 49.50, 39.50, livenation.com.

Valencia with their bloody guitar
Nearly forgot to mention Valencia's performance at Radio 104.5 FM's Winter Jam at The Piazza at Schmidts. It was held against the backdrop of snow and ramps ... and blood. Anyway, they're going and raving – deedlelelelelele – and pow, the guitarist (either JD Perry or Brendan Walter, boy I'm not sure) cuts his finger on a string. Now, if you rip cuticle skin around your thumb, you'll bleed in the cold and it'll hurt. But shred and bleed? You've got yourself a KISS show. "Between the cold and how hard he was strumming, he bled all over his hand and guitar," reminds Ice pal/photog Scott Weiner who captured our moment. More moments and snaps can be found at Icepack in print and Illustrated at the Clog tomorrow ...

Maxwell interviewing Hyper Crush using auto tune at WIOQ's Xfinity Performance Space in Bala Cynwyd on Jan. 21
I know I got some Stephen Starr exclusive stuff in Icepack Print but this'll break your pate-stuffed hearts: When expat-Philly foodies in Miami call to cry about a rumor you know it's serious. Jonathon Makar got priced out of the Rittenhouse area (that's the word) and his Snackbar is closing Feb 5. Stories heard round the campfire have him looking for new digs. Here's hoping. C'mon think outside the box: For their seventh annual Grammy Awards-eve bash in L.A. on Feb 12, Philly's The Roots have chosen their boss, Jimmy Fallon as the host of their jam rather than their more inventive usual (Don Cheadle and Dave Chappelle did so in the past). Here's hoping The Roots win something out there. MTV, looking to get out of their mess with Skins and its runaway advertisers, just signed the cast of Jersey Shore to a fourth season in Italy. How do you GTL in the homeland? While The Situation is gone, the crew of Britain's All Tomorrow's Parties fest finally bring one closer to our area — Asbury Park's Sept 30-Oct 2. event hosted by Portishead and starring Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel. When Adam from Ladyfingers tells me to listen up, I do it. "These guys are good and trashy rock n roll," says he in regard to Rob K and Uncle Butcher aka the JAM MESSENGERS. The pair recorded their first glam-punk album before they met each other (internet, yo), their new CD Dictionary of Cool is just that, and the pair'll play the Troc's Balcony Feb. 2 with Ladyfingers doing solo stompbox/guitar that night as well as local guitar god/instrument procurer Chris DiPinto unveiling his all Thin Lizzy cover band. No shit. Hey tawwlking about the ultimate meeting of glam and rock 'n' roll, 93.3 WMMR's Jacky Bam Bam's "Faces of Evil" costume which he strutted around in during the 2011 Mummers Parade, is on display at the Mummers Museum. As Bam Bam took second place in the handsome-costume category with his Golden Sunrise NYA fancy club, the gear get up is in the winner's circle.

The Hooters' David Uosikkinen continues his web-based singles project, IN THE POCKET: ESSENTIAL SONGS OF PHILADELPHIA with the second song, "Open My Eyes", featuring David Uosikkinen (The Hooters) on drums, Eric Bazilian (The Hooters) on guitar/vocals , Rick DiFonzo (Roger Waters, Patty Smythe, The A's) on guitar, singer-songwriter Jeffrey Gaines on vocals, Rob Hyman (The Hooters) on keyboards/vocals, William Wittman (Cyndi Lauper) on bass/vocals and Richard Bush The A's on vocals pictured at World Cafe Live in Philadelphia, Pa. on Jan. 25, 2011.
WHOWHATWHERE: The 54-hour Startup Weekend Philly may welcome wack networkers and project funders to the University of the Arts' this weekend. But it's another Startup's week for sure — DJ Bobby Startup. Two weeks ago, Startup got word that one of his 1972 photos of Pink Floyd would grace the cover of Larry Magid's Electric Factory coffee book this May. On Jan. 31, he'll host and spin National Mechanics' Clubfucks night dedicated to Revival, East Side Club and Asylum with Yeah Clementines (ex-Bunnydrums) and Void Vision. Startup reminds punks old and young to bring punk home movies and he'll put them on the big screen. But the best thing came the other day when he hooked up with old pals Tony Bidgood, Skip Denenberg,
George Manney
Startup and Bidgood, reunited
David Ickes and George Manney who filmed the event for his Philly Pop documentary. Bidgood was the manager and Startup the road manager of the (then-Philly-based) Stray Cats in the late '70s. Bidgood was responsible for bringing the Stray Cats to the UK where they won their first success."But Tony was responsible for designing leather costumes for glam rockers like Slade back in the day to being probably the first guy to design patchwork denim gear," says Startup. There's tons more. You can ask Startup yourself on Jan 31 or I'll put up more stuff as an Icecube on Monday with a clip from Philly Pop. A rogues gallery of Philly Pop hit World Café Live on Tuesday to celebrate the Hooters' David Uosikkinen local-tune web-based singles project, IN THE POCKET: ESSENTIAL SONGS OF PHILADELPHIA. And the revelers joined in on singing Nazz's classic "Open My Eyes" — Uosikkinen, Eric Bazilian, Greg Davis (Beru Review), The A's Rick DiFonzo and Richard Bush, Jeffrey Gaines and Rob Hyman. Bethenny Frankel not only hit the Merriam with her kid Bryn and Hoppy family brood (of Hazelton, PA) last Friday. She, her hubby and the ensemble had lunch at Farmicia. When L.A.'s fab dance-pop sensations Hyper Crush hit WIOQ's Xfinity Performance Space in Bala Cynwyd they got on-air host Maxwell to interview them with the trio's AutoTune. Yup. Fathead — yes, Philly's funky jazz boy lot — reunite for a once-only event at North Star Jan 28 with the harder, hairier Alien Architect opening. Here's a tough one: Iron Chef Jose Garces faces off against Michael Solomonov of Zahav fame on Sunday Jan. 30's Food Network edition of the Iron Chef. Solomonov is hosting a viewing party with brisket and brewski at Percy Street BBQ. Does this mean he's victorious Or just really bold? Let's eat. The promo for the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts is busting out all over. Barry W and the crew form the Hot Club of Philadelphia played an interesting gig in a loft in Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, a PR bash to promote the Festival's French-themed shows at the Kimmel Center. "They had a woman on a bungee harness suspended from the 3 story ceiling doing a sort of aerial ballet as we played, pretty amazing." Apparently the Kimmel's folk dug the HCOF so much, they added them to the series (April 30 at the Kimmel) If you want some Django-jazz sooner, they are at the ole' Mermaid Inn Jan 28 with Marty Grosz and accordion whiz Dallas Vietty. Gotta end with an asshole: Local boy Chris Illuminati (actually from Lawrence Township NJ) will read and sign copies of A**holeology: The Cheat Sheet Jan. 27 at U-Penn's Bookstore, 3601 Walnut St. I'm sure I'll see plenty of other assholes there.

Robert DeNiro and Bradly Cooper shoot a scene for Limitless in Philadelphia, Jan. 22.
After sickness, death, fire, script jigglings, more sickness, a title change and another scene addition (all detailed in previous Icepacks, Ice Cubes and sundry Icicles), Limitless stars Bradley Cooper and Robert DeNiro braved near-zero degree cold and froze their asses off while they turned 21st and Market in Philly into 57th and Lexington in New Yawk for what is being called the last film shoot of theirs in Philly. At least until they decide this flick is as bad as How Do You Know. Limitless is scheduled to open in March, so let's hope they figure this out. Look for more celeb junk in Icepack, and maybe another Limitless snap (along with other stalkerish sightings) in this week's Icepack Illustrated.

First it had a change of title — No The Dark Fields — then it got scheduled for additional shoots (a new scene at the old AAA Building on 21st and Market), or reshoots depending upon who you talk to. Then co-star Robert DeNiro got sick. Then, sadder still, Bradley Cooper's father, Charlie Cooper, (a Philly stock broker) passed. And then there was a fire at the Cooper family home in Rydal. NOW, the daytime Limitless shoot inside and outside the makeshift "campaign" that was to have happened at the AAA with DeNiro and Cooper has been pushed to Saturday. WHY? Because the director took ill last night. I'm getting this from fans and cameramen on site. Oy, this film can't win for losing — and it's scheduled to debut in March 2011.

Screw you if you haven't bought Philly MC Kuf Knotz's Boombox Logic. It's a wildly literate triply diverse debut disc that does his mom — and the Mad Dragon label — proud. If you're looking to redeem yourself, the smooth and serious Knotz — known first from his days doing The Hustle — has got a new monthly starting tonight (Wed., Jan. 19) that promises to be as all-genre encompassing as his debut CD. The Boombox Collective is a one-a-month hip-hop party at World Cafe Live's Upstairs. In addition to his fellow emcees and beatmakers Chalk & The Beige American, Curly Castro, Dave Vegas and DJ Stoupe, Knotz will welcome a group of the Hussian School of Art's students performing live visual arts such as painting, sketching and photographing. If by some chance you miss tonight's party, and shame if you do, Knotz will perform Sat., Jan. 22, at 5:30 p.m. for the Drexel University Homecoming Pre-Show at Nesbitt Hall. Huzzah.

Welcome to the first Icepack of 2011. Well really, this one's the first, with info on Guvnah Rendell's farewell gifts to Philly and his Beach Boys/John Stamos (ugh) bye-bye-bash, chef David Katz and Philly's porn giants. But this is the year's first Ice online. So, have a photo of the Mummers taken by Icepack snapper Scott Weiner to start your year proper. Chamber Philly faves Buried Beds just announced a tour that will immediately whisk them away with homeboys Dr. Dog, starting Jan. 29 at DC's 9:30 Club. Beat it. Q102 is holding a contest on Saturday (3 p.m.) at the Plaza at the King of Prussia Mall to sing Justin Bieber songs and win a trip for four to the LA premiere/meet-n-greet of his concert film, Justin Bieber: Never Say Never.

Julianna White and Frankie Valli
How about a contest for grown-ups? The Food Network's Restaurant: Impossible (eateries with too few customers and too many problems) is looking to cast local restaubars. Has your hot spot gone cold? Go to restaurantimpossible.com. The show premieres Jan. 19. No doubt about it: I love Philly's raw and coolly twisted trio, Northern Liberties. Google my name and theirs and you'll find out how much. That said, I'm proud as peach pie to announce that director Jon Foy's documentary about Libert-ine Justin Duerr Resurrect Dead, about Justin's quest to solve the Toynbee Tile mystery — will premiere Jan. 20 at the Sundance Film Fest. BUT, they need to do sound correction before it hits Colorado. Please donate here and read the director's story. Who dared to deface Fathom, Mike Stollenwerk's Girard Ave. still-unopen fisherie that we've written up repeatedly? Spotted the graffiti and the taggers ain't original. Why don't you go hit the neighborhood McDs?

Kathi Griffin and A.D. Amorosi
WHOWHATWHERE: You know when Kathy Griffin was in Philly in November I asked her how she could keep her BRAVO network show My Life on The D-List going what her obvious up-lift in status. She said she wasn't and that she was trying to figure out when it should end and when she'd begin what she called an improvisational "Larry David Curb Your Enthusiasm-like series" on her exploits. People.com states that the time is now for the D-List to die and that she and BRAVO will film and show four live comedy stand-up events a year. She mentions the improv series too, but no definitive network. For People, Griffin states, "it's time to spread my wings and show that I'm a little different than Kate Gosselin." Gosselin, I may add was spotted filming something worthless with her children on the Art Museum steps a few weeks ago. Oh, and remember I mentioned that Jersey Shore shawty Snooki had her ball-dropping MTV NYE event moved from Times Square to Seaside Heights, the home of the Jersey Shore house? Well, she did it in Seaside and it aired on MTV on Dec. 31 at midnight. But according to our photog Scott Weiner when he went to Seaside Heights on Dec. 31. all he found was left over scaffolding. "They shot it the night before after a dress rehearsal," says Weiner. Has MTV ever stated on-air that it was taped? I don ti'nk so Queekschtraw. Dog killer Michael Vick hit the new Mitchell & Ness (12th and Chestnut) shop the other day and bought Flyers and 76ers gear. Whatever. Luckily he didn't sully the even newer Mitchell & Ness shop-in-a-shop at 15th and Walnut's UBIQ where M&N's more fashion-forward sports gear lives. The MUNBIQ (my abbreviation) that had a quiet opening in December has to have a loud opening. That's Jan. 21. Comic Kevin Hart, last seen in Philly at the Diddy Joy to the World event two weeks ago, hit the Buck Wild/Turae Gordon show on Saturday at the Laff House and did a quickie routine. Limelight hog. Bradley Cooper's birthday was Wednesday. Will anyone at Sampan — where he'll soon be shooting a new finale to Limitless (his Philly filmed DeNiro-costarrer once titled The Dark Fields) — serve a b-day cake? Miss New Jersey Julianna White met up with Frankie Valli, original Jersey Boy and pal of Jerry Blavat, during the Four Seasons-er's Jan. 1 gig at Borgata's Music Box Theatre. Speaking of the Geator, he'll start 2011 with a bang when he hits the Philadelphia History Museum Jan. 11 at 6 p.m. for a "Conversation on Doo Wop" with Philadelphia magazine editor Tom McGrath. It's going to be a long night. Thankfully. Along with sadly ending 2010 with the passing of Philly boxer Bennie Briscoe, this city lost a most renowned and prominent actress in Melissa Lynch due to fatal injuries from a car accident. Lynch, cast in Theater Exile's Martin McDonagh-penned/Matt Pfeiffer-directed black comedy The Lieutenant of Inishmore, has been recast in her role by Elena Bossler. "It's a miserable business, having to relay this in light of the circumstances," says Exile's Tenley Gwen Bank.

You can't get into The Dandelion for NYE? Or the Barbary? Or anyplace in Philly? Go to Seaside Heights, N.J. — home of MTV's Jersey Shore — and watch Snooki pull the stunt she was supposed to have done in NYC at midnight, dropping from some ball or another. What was to have been Snooki's big moment on Times Square, being lowered from a ball (not THE ball) at the stroke of twelve just got squashed yesterday, so states the NY Times...that's right, the paper of record. The Times Square Alliance and Countdown Entertainment, which organize the Times Square celebration, halted those plans.
"It was never intended or requested for Snooki to be in the actual New Year's Eve Ball in Times Square," the groups say in a statement. "The request to have her in a separate ball on a set-back roof came too late and was too impractical to fit in to our outdoor events."
So Snooki will do her hamster routine from a "descending ball apparatus" at the Jersey Shore house — that crew returns to MTV on Jan. 6 2011. Here're some TMZ snaps of construction. See you on the beach.
