Night Watch

Assuming I don’t run out, I’ll be posting some of the best songs/videos of the year every night at midnight. Or my favorites, anyway. Some of these might be great songs with awful videos. Or vice versa. Some could just be hipster bullshit. Hopefully you’ll see something you like. This might be my favorite song of the year. Ignoring the snobby eagle in the beginning, it’s a pretty kickass video. Plus, they’re totally a Philly band.

This is so dorky and unhip, I only feel comfortable posting it in the middle of the night when CritMass editor Molly Eichel is fast asleep and dreaming of Jean Claude Van Damme. It's the first video by The Dragonz, a weird trio of cast members from this year's Survivor: Heroes vs. Villians season. The drummer/singer is a self-styled guru type named Coach who had to be told not to do his homebrew tai chi in front of his tribe because everybody was laughing at him. The singer is Courtney, a fun but ultimately useless waif, Survivor-wise. The guitarist is dumbass puppy JT who actually handed an immunity idol to the show's biggest dickhead/villain for no reason whatsoever. Yes, I still watch the show (online). No, I don't know anybody else who does. Of any age. And: No, I don't think this is a good song.

The song's not wowing me, but like everything Spike Jonze does, it's worth watching.

We just can't help ourselves. You can't, either; just admit it.

Gaga, whose album The Fame made our Top 21 Albums of 2009, was set to debut her new video at 11:30 p.m. on E! News tonight, but it looks like a few blogs beat E! to the punch. We pounced, natch.

What do you think? Was it worth all the hype?

Apparently, it's "Something that reminds smart people they are better than dumb people."

I also enjoy "a good excuse to grow a mustache."

Really, it's all for the 25th Independent Spirit Awards, which airs this Friday on IFC at 11 p.m. EST (thanks a lot, California).

(Oh hey, is that Viola Davis, Philly's faux mayor in Law Abiding Citizen? Oh hey, is this an awesome excuse to link to Meal Ticket's post about LAC's discussion of Del Frisco's? Yes. Yes, it is.)

Like we told you when the noms came out, Philly has a big stake in them this year with nods for Precious' Lee Daniels, (500) Days of Summer writer Scott Neustadter, Maria Bello, Big Fan and, most importantly Tom Quinn's Mummers' flick Near Year Parade, which Mark Mauer told you about upon its release. It's up for the John Cassavettes Award given to a feature made for under $500,000. Give another big "Hell Yeah!" for Quinn, why dontcha?

It's not a good day out there. Not for the Haitian community or their families living elsewhere. Nor for the family and fans of Teddy Pendergrass, of which we consider ourselves one having spoken with for him on more than one occasion. Maybe we could use a laugh.

Our favorite Twit(ter), drummer and the only man on late night television not quaking in his boots, Philly's ?uestlove, takes part in a Funny or Die skit with Wu-Tang Clan leader and Quentin Tarantino pal RZA where the percussionist and the rapper/producer make their own NBC TV screen test for Parks and Recreation. RZA stars, ?uest narrates and if the actual Amy Poehler show was this hilarious I wouldn't dare step out during my weekly TiVo-ing of it.

Check out this amazing documentary ' an episode of the five-part Secret Rules of the World series '' by Jon Ronson (who also wrote Men Who Stare at Goats, soon to be a major motion picture). It's about British sportscaster-turned-conspiracy theorist David Icke who believes the world is run by 12-foot-tall lizards. Some members of the ACLU think that's code for 'Jews.' Icke insists he's really talking about lizards, and I believe him. It's crazy how this crazy man inspired the very conspiracy that seeks to shut him down.
