Nash Edgerton's feature debut The Square gets its Philly premiere tonight at the Philadelphia FIlm Society's Spring Preview. The Square features Edgerton's short film Spider. Watch it so you know what you're getting into and don't say we didn't warn you.

Here's what Gary M. Kramer had to say about The Square:

Delivering on the promise director Nash Edgerton displayed in his short, Spider (which unspools here, too), The Square alternates between nervous hilarity and gasp-inducing shock. After Carla (Claire van der Boom) discovers her husband's bag of cash, she gives her married lover, Ray (David Roberts), an ultimatum: Help her steal the cash and escape or she will end their relationship. Ray reluctantly, perhaps foolishly, agrees. Using the kickbacks he's getting at work, Ray hires an arsonist (Joel Edgerton, the director's brother and co-screenwriter) to mask their crime. This being a film noir, nothing goes as planned. Soon, Ray is being blackmailed, and he must discover his tormentor and cover his tracks. Edgerton ratchets up the tension throughout, boxing Ray and Carla into tight, uncomfortable situations that are riveting to the end, when the filmmaker pulls the rug — if not the floor — out from under everyone.

The Square, Fri., April 9, 9:45 p.m., free, Prince Music Theater, 1412 Chestnut St., filmadelphia.org.

Maybe you read my cover story on U.S. Girls and thought, "huh. wonder what she sounds like, exactly." Well, check out this video for what might be her most instantly accessible track. Good song. Good video.

Came across the work of artist Colin Christian this morning on Art Milk, and immediately thought of this, and was glad:
What does this creepy art remind you of? Lemme know in the comments.

Erstwhile Philly boys Tim and Eric are prolific outside of their batshit Adult Swim show Tim and Eric Awesome Show Good Job!, carving a niche for themselves as music video directors (Eric, Major Lazer's "Pon de Floor" is good, but not nearly as good as this) and vodka pitchmen. Old Spice, who did those bitchin' Bruce Campbell ads, has snatched them up to now direct a series of commercials starringformer Eagle/actor in the upcoming Expendables/my completely unexplainable celeb crush Terry Crews. God, I would have loved to been on the set for this shoot. Unlike other Tim and Eric-directed commercials, this one doesn't neuter their trademark out there humor.

I can't get enough of Ted Leo's version of Tears for Fears' "Everybody Wants to Rule the World," which is apparently Teddy L.'s fave song because used to listen to it with his pops (aww! Cute attack!).

It's all part of the AV Club's Undercover series. Every Tuesday, various artists choose one song to cover from a predetermined list. It all takes place in one tiny round room that the band then John Hancocks. Choices range from current (MIA's "Paper Planes") to totally ridic (Billy Squier's "Everbody Wants You," Starship's "We Built this City") to classic (Hall & Oates' "One on One").

Of course, I'm waiting with bated breath for who covers Bruce Springsteen's "Atlantic City," considering how well it lends itself to covers (The Hold Steady did an incredible one for the War Children comp) and its the motherfucking Boss. I would totally love some Titus Andronicus on that track. They could up the scuzz-factor and make it a New Jerz vs. Old Jerz battle of the ages.

See any other songs on that list that would pair up well with another current band?

Just got word from our neighbor, Quirk Books, that they've dropped the trailer for Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: Dawn of the Dreadfuls, a prequel to the crazy-famous PPZ, on their YouTube channel.

Chock-full of Bennet sisters in pastel frocks screaming "hi-ya!" and polite Englishmen eating brains, this book trailer has serious potential for a movie. What say you, Natalie Portman?

Friend of Crit Mass Clay sent us this video of Charm City band Teeth Mountain's appearance on an episode of Judge Judy. Member Kate Levitt charges defendant John Coward with killing her cat in a drunken haze. Love Levitt's line about not knowing the days of the week 'cause she's a musician.

We're all for hilarious publicity stunts (even if the tip about the video itself is included under the publicity stunt umbrella, considering Teeth Mountain plays Danger Danger Gallery on March 1). But even more than that, we love stickin' it to Judge Judy (you heard me).
