Collectors of pretty things, take note: Every week, we're rounding up a what's-what of what we [heart], culled from the scores of design blogs, artist sites and Etsy treasuries we stalk on the regular. If you're anything like me, you have a running wish list in your head at all times — a summer straw hat, everything at Lost + Found, etc. — except when your birthday's coming up. When Grandma calls asking what you'd like on your special day, all you can think of are items from the "need" list (which is why I'm getting a toaster this year); as far as deepest giftable desires, the mind draws a complete blank. So in the true spirit of Coveted — things we want, no matter how impractical — and on the occasion of my impending b-day, here's a set of goods any birthday girl would be happy to call her own.
  • "Paige Reads Peyton Place" open-edition print, $18, Janet Hill Studio
  • Robin's-Egg Blue, Copper-Enamel Hoop Earrings, $26, Teka and Zoe
  • "Will Perform for Cakes" hand-painted side plate, $25, Jim Bob Art

Neighborhood Watch photographs some of Philly's most fashionable.
Even on Philly's grayest days, there's always someone to bring a glimmer of life to the streets. One of those people was Lindsay M. (21) who says her mod look was inspired by comfort (including those Dolce Vita studded wedges). "I always dress up. I wanted to be sexy and fun," she says. Her fierce print leggings came from Macy's, but the romper is a vintage piece. "To be a smart shopper, you have to know what's timeless," she says. The Urban Outfitters employee says her favorite designers are Gareth Pugh and Rick Owens. "If I could afford them, I'd be in them everyday, but if I want a trend, I want it cheap," she adds.
Aside from her great look, Lindsay's ink stood out to me as well. She says she has 10 tattoos altogether and will soon be heading back to her fave spot, Olde City Tattoo (44 S. Second St., 215-627-6271) to finish her half-sleeve. I'm right behind you Lindsay!
Alyson D.'s (21) duo of geometric patterns and bold satin caught my eye immediately. Loved the monochromatic accessories: The stark black shades and simple gladiator flats were a great accent, along with her bag and waist belt. Her vivacious look was put together for an interview, and later for her current job in the evening at Village Whiskey (118 S. 20th St., 215-655-1088). Judging by the pairing of two very different media, Alyson's golden rule stands true: "Things don't have to match." She derives her style inspiration from Free People, blog sites, and urban designers. Alyson's final words of wisdom were "Don't mix animal print. It makes me angry." ...And you don't want to make Alyson angry...
Upon my first visit to NoLibs, I went through hell (literally, in this heat), searching for the Piazza at Schmidts upon getting off the EL. That's when I found Caitlin V. (21), who was ever-so-kind to direct me there. Caitlin's '60s-inspired pedal pushers and polka dots were the cutest thing. To keep up on her look, the student says she loves Philly vintage shop Two Percent to Glory (1817 Frankford Ave., 917-348-4477) for their great selection. Her fashion icons are the classic Audrey Hepburn who she says is the epitome of "looking great while being a minimalist" and the fresh-faced Katy Perry who "has her own style and always looks great."
Last but not least, look closely at Caitlin's arms: She has the the Beatles, as rendered from the cover art of Relvover inked on each one. Maybe Paul McCartney will see this marry her and end his mile long track record. She seems pretty dedicated.

After a solid five and a half year stint, chic thread haven TONY (47 N. 3rd St., 215-592-8669) will close on Sun., June 20. However, as a token of gratitude to all of its supporting customers, TONY owner Pamela Dollak will host a Beat the Clock finale party and sale to commemorate its closing and clear out its inventory. This weekend, you'll find a 50 percent discount on all items this Sat. June 19, and 60 percent off on Sunday, not to mention cocktails and snacks. Despite closing its doors, Dollak says there is a strong possibility that TONY's e-boutique will live on, allowing customers to purchase accessories online. Dollak says, "It's been a great ride dressing and accessorizing our customers so the sales are a thank you. I've accumulated a lot of great friendships that will last longer than the store."

This Saturday and Sunday, you won't need fat wallets to walk home with sweet goods. As CP's own Neighborhood Watcher Nyidera Edwards reports, InLiquid's 11th annual Art for the Cash Poor is all about budget. You won't find a single item that costs more than $199, and most goods are way cheaper. Here are some of our favorite picks (including the sad/awesome Flyers bracelet by Becks Buttons, above) from artists who'll show their work this weekend. Just make sure to check AFTCP's website since not everyone's participating both days. Happy shopping!

Neighborhood Watch finds fashionable folk all across the city. This week: New Neighborhood Water Nyidera ventured into Amazonian heat and found that most people were damn near naked. As for the others who opted not to give Philly a show, the stifling heat deterred them from even caring about a look altogether. However, there were a few among the masses who gave her something to talk about.
Nyidera Edwards
Robin C.
I fell in love with Robin C.'s look instantly, but the vintage specs were the icing on the cake. Nothing beats the outre contrast of Urkel glasses and black spandex. She says she loves big, vintage glasses. Not to mention body ink! (She has five tattoos.) When I asked the Jersey native how she pieced together her ensemble, she simply laughed and replied, "I don't know what the hell inspired this." As for her overall inspiration, the makeup artist says, "I'm inspired by everything from music to everyday people. I shop anywhere from Target to Macy's to Nordstrom. Whatever I like, I grab." I can only imagine how many men in today's sweltering heat would've liked to grab her. Reeoow!
Johanna S. (26) is walking charge of assault with a deadly weapon. Do you see that beautiful cluster of gems hanging from her neck? The South Philly girl says she accidentally stabbed her husband with it. "Trust me, it's not his favorite," she says smiling. This Macy's signature I-N-C piece is her favorite necklace. Love it! As for the pewter Betsey Johnson chain she paired it with (from Macy's, as well), I'd take that, too. The Mitchell & Ness employee says today's punk rock-esque look was dictated by her accessories. I loved the bright pink polish and dark, strappy heels. Her fave designer is none other than Betsey and she loves Blake Lively. "I don't wanna dress like her. But she's really gorgeous and always looks great." But Johanna, you look great, too, darling! <3
Sunny Fridays are the perfect days to spice up the sidewalks of Chestnut Street with pastels and spring hues. Tyrone H., 29, says, "I just wanted to look happy. I dress based on my mood." I just couldn't stop gushing over the rich purple and soft lilac. But let's get to the kicks. I have a soft spot for Puma's, so of course, I inquired. The South Philly social worker says he received these conversation pieces as a gift from Daffy's. This black shoe has a harmonious blend of orange, green, blue and a vague purple. Take note of the laces: I assumed the two-tone look was done purposefully but stood corrected; Tyrone nonchalantly says, "I actually just couldn't find the other one. So I just said 'Hey, whatever.'" Some of his fashion faves include the infamous Billionaire Boy Pharrell Williams, Vogue's Andre Leon Talley and Gwyneth Paltrow. I'm sure he looks good even on his shitty days.
Here's another simple look, played up with bold pieces. I'm not sure if it was Melissa H.'s (22) bleached denim, blingy accessories, or her commanding aura that stood out to me most. I found this Germantown/Mount Airy native glam doll floating into Zara on Walnut Street. The Lincoln University student says she was shooting for the "street chic, downtown look" when pondering what to wear today. I asked Melissa where she got her sexy, black heels and her eyes lit up as she smiled: She got her Alice + Olivia sky highs at Payless — frugal and fashionable. Melissa says her thread haven is Forever 21 and her style icons are Alice + Olivia and Elizabeth & James.
When I found Camden resident C.J. 22 walking along 12th Street, I was about to retire for the afternoon, having met my four-victim quota. However, that was before I laid eyes on C.J.'s 'Now and Later' Nikes. The neon pink and yellow jumped out of the solid black canvas of the shoes, complementing his colorful graphic tee. Another conscious shopper, C.J. only shelled out $30 for the sneaks at Kicks USA in the Gallery at Market East. The Walmart support manager says, "I like colors and I buy any shoe that stands out to me." C.J., I don't blame you. If I could find reasonably priced shoes for each outfit, my closet would look like Hurricane Madden blew through it. Steve is the only man who gets my money.

Collectors of pretty things, take note: Every week, we're rounding up a what's-what of what we [heart], culled from the scores of design blogs, artist sites and Etsy treasuries we stalk on the regular. There's a great line in Justin Bauer's lit column this week: After Memorial Day weekend, outlandish plotting and high page counts, like white shoes or straw hats, magically become appropriate. Hey, he's right — it's straw hat season! Breezy, stylish and shade-producing is a summer fashion trifecta if we ever saw one. Here are a handful of our favorites — it's a preppy party and you're invited.

Collectors of pretty things, take note: Every week, we're rounding up a what's-what of what we [heart], culled from the scores of design blogs, artist sites and Etsy treasuries we stalk on the regular. So many treats to share with you on this hot, hot Thursday:
  • Purchasing a pink foot-long Pocket Axe might be the closest we ever come to bearing arms. The tagline? "Hickory, steel and sex appeal." Pretty much. $95, Best Made Co. (spied first at PAPERMAG)
  • Confuse your dinner guests by asking them to place their wine glasses on slices of whole-wheat bread. Then laugh when they realize they're just cork coasters. Silly friends. Oiti (spied first at Desire to Inspire)
  • Snakes on a print! This Ryan Berkley-created I've Got a New Attitude print screams "change is good." $18, Little Paper Planes
  • Nan Lawson's hipster-but-not-hipster series is sweet all around, but we're particularly fond of the 5-by-7-inch I Love My Typewriter. $10, etsy.com/shop/nanlawson (spied first at The Storque)
  • We've never been to the Olympic peninsula, but we heart it just the same. $25, Paper Cut Works (spied first at I Heart Handmade)
  • Grocery lists, snarky messages, to-do lists: We have big ideas for this little Chalkboard Thought Bubble. If only we weren't left-handed. $28, Red Velvet Art (spied first at Poppytalk)
  • If you run a tape head over these half-cassette tape/half-thread ties, they're audible. How cool is that? This fact alone should be enough to sell you on the expensive-but-awesome Sonic Fabric Necktie. $120, Alyce Santoro via Supermarket (spied first at Design for Mankind)

Collectors of pretty things, take note: Every week, we're rounding up a what's-what of what we [heart], culled from the scores of design blogs, artist sites and Etsy treasuries we stalk on the regular. While shopping in the Gayborhood last week, we stumbled upon Verde (108 S. 13th St., 215-546-8700, verdephiladelphia.com), and holy hell were we impressed. Marcie Turney and Valerie Safran, the women behind BYOBs Bindi and Lolita, opened this gift shop about a year ago, and we lament not coming here sooner. Because wow. Tons of freshly cut flowers, planters, jewelry, accessories, bags, candles, even artisanal Marcie Blaine-brand chocolate — basically the perfect one-stop shop for gifts for girls (ahem, June 26, cough cough). Verde's website is pretty basic, so below we're sharing a few items from our favorite brands, all of which have goods for sale at the store (call for price and availability). There's tons more to see, too, so stop by next time you're in the 'hood.

This weekend was every craft aficionado/fashionista/lover of all things funky dream: the Art Star Craft Bazaar (Alex told you about it, remember?). So what'd you get? The first thing I picked up was this tank/super mini-dress from Buffalo, NY's Holly Hue for only $10!:
I love the wolf detailing but my fave part is the moon, which, when I wore it later that night, led to lots of comments about how my boobs were over the moon (although, I guess they were really under them?). My cell phone cam doesn't do the colors of this shirt justice, but I loved everything Philly's own Workhardened had to offer. These were all limited edition for Art Star so I couldn't help myself.

Maine's Pinecone+Chickadee was a big hit with my crowd. I went with this veeery low-necked ultra soft shirt:

Despite being out-of-date, my favorite purchase of the entire Bazaar?:

Molly picked the perfect weekend for this out-of-towner to visit Philly. First the craft bazaar and then the italian market fest, how could you go wrong? If I had the funds, I would have bought every dress at Holly Hue and every shirt at Pinecone+Chickadee. Instead, I just got one at each. But I love them both, a lot. I'm rocking the robot serving you a meal shirt (or that's how I like to look at it at least) right now. Super soft and cute. But it's the dress that I love best. Off center zipper, pockets, three different patterns!!! It was pretty much meant to be owned by me.

I tried to be very, very well-behaved at Art Star (due to dwindling bank account, not any legit self-control). Holly Hue was hawking those adorable re-vamped hoodies, Jay McCarroll had cute skits and vests, and there were so many weirdly lovable stuffed animals. But. I only left with a shrinky-dink necklace by BirdQueen Designs and my friend picked up a fun wallet from Orange Slice. Still an amazing venue for browsing and coveting!

I was a vendor (third time, love it more every year!), so I didn't have much time to look around, but I did buy a necklace from the Foundling for myself, and one for a gift. I just love her work! It was probably a good thing I couldn't leave my booth, or I'd have bought so much more....

I wanted to buy so many lovely things I got my eyes on. However this year, I only bought a couple of things. I purchased a pair of antique parchment handwritten deed earrings from Peg and Awl. I also got a vintage journal recycled from Overdue Industries made from an old children's book called Rip Van Winkle and the untold stories of Sleepy Hollow. Super cool idea!

Overdue Industries was also a hit with my group. Loved those journals but I had t-shirts in my eyes and couldn't get them out.

I bought an awesome KimmChi t-shirt and a cute Supermaggie short sleeve hoodie. I <3 Art Star!

I had a very strict $27 budget (aka the contents of my wallet), so I set out a goal -- find a beautiful print in the orange-yellow-brown color palette to complement my dining room colors -- and stuck to it. Wound up back at Art Star's table to purchase a $20 (plus sneaky tax) print of a girl with long dark hair that turns into a pair of ravens at its tips. The artist's name isn't on the print, and I can't find it on the Art Star website, but if anyone knows what I'm talking about, let me know!

Carolyn - Thanks for your puchase! The print is by Noosed Kitty - NY based artist Jamie Fales.

Thanks to everyone that came out & supported our amazingly talented vendors. I purchased two awesome mounted taxidermy creatures by Horrible Adorables & a red sun hat by Endless Hats. My hubby got me a wooden fox pin from peppersprouts.

My wife bought a hand-bound note pad with LEGO(r) base plates for our son from Moonlight Bindery. Since my daughter had a booth at Art Star we went back the next day to show off the LEGO(r) creation my son had created using the note-pad as the base. You can see a photo of it at Moonlight Bindery's blog (http://moonlightbindery.blogspot.com/)

For their last outing as Neighborhood Watchers, Josh and Julia decided to do it up right in the Gayborhood, where you'll always be sure to find gays, girls and, if you're lucky, a truckload of trannies.
Where else but Hooters and a business in the Gayborhood would this be required attire? Dantasia R. (30), a server at Q Bar & Lounge (1234 Locust St., 215-732-1800), models his cocktail hour uniform made up of short shorts, tube socks and a black shirt. To make it his own, however, he pops on a few extra elements like his signature piece and current obsession: the teal circle scarf from American Apparel. Faster than a speeding gay bullet, he showed us several ways the scarf could be worn. Here he rocks an Edie Beale-inspired head wrap. You better work.
Photos | Josh Middleton and Julia West
Sara L. (23) almost didn't wear this dress because her gay friend told her it looked like someone swallowed triangles and finger paint and barfed all over her. While we usually believe gays have a leg up when it comes to fashion, we think this fruit fly made the right choice with this figure-flattering vintage dress from a shop in Astoria, N.Y. We also dig the way she enhances the red regurgitated triangles by accessorizing with like-colored flats and clutch. When looking for clothes she says she usually opts for pieces from the '50s and '60s because that was a generation that knew how to dress a girl with hips. We give her an 'A' for Ass-a-licious.
Though she's wearing one around her neck, Shaya K. (21) doesn't need a bejeweled key to unlock her inner man-eater. She was all set to go clubbing with a bag full of everything she'll need for the evening: blush (aka "emergency eye shadow"), lip gloss (because she never leaves home without it) and a lifetime supply of body glitter. "Glitter brings out a lot in people," she says, "like confidence and glamour." This glamour puss says Lil' Kim inspired the red hot number she decided to slip into that evening. Spice it up, sex kitten! If anyone has the chops to be a supermodel it's 6-foot-tall Victoria B. (20). In fact, she is a working runway, catalog and swimsuit model. She says she looks to current fashion icon Chanel Iman for fashion inspiration because they possess many similarities. To her, deciding what to wear is an outlet for personal empowerment. "With fashion it's basically your own unique style, bringing it to life and not worrying what anyone else thinks about it," Victoria says. You better preach it, honey child.
