You sunk my Scrabbleship

Don't let the fancy name fool you, it's Battleship on the computer. Have fun and happy Veteran's Day. I'll warn you that it's a little buggy, so it might be a good idea to refresh in between games.

Go play here.

Think you can become the president of the United States by hopping on piggies and collecting flag pins? Yes, you can!

Play it here. Big thanks to Dominic Mercier of The 1-Upper fame, who also told me the trick to getting past the Bridge to Nowhere on level 2.

Yahtzee!

Alright, let's clear the air ... I love Yahtzee! If there was one game to sustain my sanity were I to be shipwrecked, it would be rolling multiple dice and screaming that word after landing five of a kind. But I've got say that Zilch gives Yahtzee a run for its money, mostly because it involves taking more risks. The premise is similar, but the scoring is slightly different and you need to bank your points. Each round, you need to bank 300 points for any to count toward your total, but you can keep rolling to see if you can get more. There's the risk, though. If you don't land any scoring dice, you get zilch and lose all of your points for that round. Get zilch three times in a row, and it knocks 500 off of your accumulated total. The total you need to reach to win depends on your difficulty setting, but the middle of the road is 10,000. It's a bit tricky, but the game's got a good tutorial to get you up and running.

I only played against the computer, but you can play online or against a friend sitting next to you. It's supposed to be completely random, but it looks to me like the computer gets some lucky bounces.

Check out Zilch here.

Real ultimate power

It's oldies week here at the 1-Upper. I was reading something about the top 100 Flash games looking for new stuff, and I came across and entry on N, which made me realize I completely forgot about it. It's been one of my favorite games for a long time, so I'm sorry, N, for being so neglectful.

N is a lot like the happy baby of the Flash version of Portal and the Fancy Pants Adventures series. You control a little ninja - though he looks a lot like that guy playing the flute that a lot of people have unfortunate tattoos of - whose mission, I suppose, is to collect little gold cubes. They kind of remind me of Energon cubes, but there aren't any giant robots about (and if you get this reference you are officially a dork, too). Collecting cubes gives you more time to solve each level, which mainly consists of you finding the switch to open the door blocking the way out. As you move ahead, of course, it gets tougher and tougher and things actually start to shoot at you. But the one thing that gets me about this game every time is the physics. It still amazes me that such a simple browser game can have what looks and feels like a fully realized physics engine.

Go play N here.

I'm just so gosh-darn folksy!

Alright, folks, your regualrly non-partisan 1-Upper is going to get a bit political here. There's not much to this game - in fact, I made up the name in the title - but i was amazed at how fast someone came up with this post-Couric interview.

Use the arrow keys to aim your Palin cannon and blast Mr. Putin's head from Alaskan airspace. God knows he's running illeagal trade missions or something there. Right? Just don't let the bomb's accumulate at the bottom or the National Review will be calling for you to step down from the race!

Blast Putin here.

It's weird! And cleverly edited! Zombies! Click on the pic. (Warning: violence, bad words, strange acting choices, awesome.)

GAHHHHHH!!!!!

OK folks, fair warning ... the following game will most likely scream in frustration, kick your furniture over, and just put you in a downright foul mood. But I'll tell you this, it's worth it.

The premise of Get a key. Open the Door. is simple. Just read the title. You'll progress through a series of rooms where the goal is to find the key and then open the door to the next room. Sometimes, you'll even have to find the door. It starts out easy enough, then progresses to some of the most fiendish puzzles. You'll really have to change your way of thinking from one room to the next. If there were awards for best online game of the year, this should get it. It's a great mix of fun, good design, and mind-numbingly frustrating puzzles.

I waited to post this until I had finished the game, which took me a while. If you get stuck on a room, post a comment and I'll give you a hint.

Get some keys and open some doors here.

Get out your plaid knickers and argyle socks

It's time for some golf! Think mini golf couldn't get any better? Well, you're wrong because it just did. The best thing about the physics-based puzzle game Putt Base is that someone took something as simple as computer-based mini golf and threw in elements of The Incredible Machine, like ramps and springs, allowing you to edit the course as you see fit.

The premise of the game is the same as regular golf, except that you only get one shot to get the ball in the hole. You'll get a set number of pieces to throw into the field, mostly ramps at 45-degree angles and little quarterpipes to redirect the ball. I found, though, that the slapdash approach to tossing pieces around the board actually works, much to my high-school physics teacher's dismay, I'm sure.

Check out Putt Base here.

Fresh powder

So I'm not quite sure who the adjective aggressive belongs to here, you, the obviously Germanic skier racing down the Alps, or the soldiers trying to shoot you from the gondolas along the course. Apparently, skiing is now a crime punishable by death.

Aggressive Alpine Skiing is so simple, and that's what makes it horribly addicting. You use the arrow keys to move (up jumps) as you race along collecting stars and hitting insane jumps, all the while leaping over shacks and avoiding lead death from above. There's not much more to say, other than the music is goofy, but that adds a bit of charm to the game. It's a bit like being in a Flash game rave, so don't forget your glow sticks.

Play Aggressive Alpine Skiing here.

USA! USA!

First off, here's hoping this becomes a real Olympic sport. I have no idea why this game is called Micro Olympics, but I'm guessing the guy and airplane that you stuff in a canon has something to do with it. Other than that, the rest of the world looks to be a pretty normal size. This is another one of those goofy browser games where you aim, guess at the power, and then hope whatever you're launching goes far. It's been done a million times, but this one ups it a bit by adding money and upgrades to the mix. Your little guy also makes hilarious sound effects that never get old.

Each time you face an opponent and beat his distance, you get a little cash that you can spend to trick out your plane, like cans of soda that make you shoot back up in the air and skis to make you skim across the water. You can even call Freaky the radioactive fish to give you a little bump. My personal record is 1,200 meters. Beat that!

Play Micro Olypmics here.
