Royal Sushi & Izakaya rolls out with a Feb. 21 ramen fest

One of the most contentious and preposterous Meal Ticket comment threads in the history of this blog can be found below our Aug. 4 post announcing that Khyber owners Stephen Simons and Dave Frank intended to convert their Old City rock club (56 S. Second St.) into an izakaya (Japanese pub) run by former Ro-Zu chef Todd Dae Kulper. A certain contingent of folks did not seem keen to this idea, and Simons and Frank eventually decided to call an audible and convert the venue into Khyber Pass Pub, a Southern-style joint that our Adam Erace loved. Simons and Frank, however, never abandoned the Kulper-curated izakaya idea, and now it appears that they'll be testing out Japanese dishes, pop-up style, in the Khyber's kitchen â at least according to royalsushiandizakaya.com (is this the name of their upcoming joint, in a shoutout to the owners' Royal Tavern?). For now it looks like the Khyber will be serving hakata-style ramen on Mon., Feb. 21, from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m., as R&D for their izakaya concept, which still does not have an official location. (What's more: The "#1" descriptor in the image suggests this is the first in a series.) Hope to have more soon; for now, peep the website for a breakdown of what goes into the soup.
