4th Annual Pour-A-Palooza at the Pour House

POSTED: Monday, July 16, 2012, 10:07 AM

The folks across the river didn't let pouring rain stop them on Saturday from standing around the parking lot of the Pour House (124 Haddon Ave., Westmont, NJ) getting slodged out of their gourd on seventy libations from thirty some-odd breweries both local and around the nation (as well as international, in the case of the Quebecois Unibroue).

Here are some notes salvaged off increasingly illegible scribblings on the back of a gross cocktail napkin.

Victory Brewing featured their Summer Love and Saison DuBuff. Reps say they just took out a 50 thousand dollar loan to expand their facility, they expect to triple their sales over the next few years.

Sly Fox featured Pikeland Pils (yum!) and Raspberry Reserve. I got to ask SF rep Cory Reid about the popular state of canning in craft beer.

"It's awesome. We were kind of at the beginning of it. It was real challenging seven years ago, it's getting better and better every year. It's something we're very proud of.  There are benefits to bottles too. In terms of costs it's six of one, half dozen of the other. Printing on cans is very expensive, it's not like with bottles where you can just print out a roll of labels and slap it on there. You have to print directly onto the cans. But the freight costs are way cheaper because a can weighs an eighth of a bottle, so it's much less expensive to ship it."

Weyerbacher had Blithering Idiot (which most of us know not to touch during the summer, much less in a booze-fest at which we're not allowed to sleep over) and Last Chance IPA (which, in true Weyerbacher form, is unsettlingly bitter). Josh and Natalie from Weyerbacher say a percentage of their Last Chance sales go to animal shelters in the Easton area.

Yards had bourbon-barrel renditions of their Thomas Jefferson Tavern ale and George Washington Tavern Porter. Both were knockouts. Think of how good the regular ones are, and then add a mellow vanilla spice. Bourbon-barrels were a perfect fit. Tom Kehoe, if you're reading this, I'll do unspeakable things to get these available in bottles.

Got to speak with Carton Brewing's Doug Edwards. Carton is a young whipper-snapper of a nearby brewery, coming up on their first birthday. "Last August 15th we opened for business, we can be found in about a hundred bars all over New Jersey. Sixtels and halves at the moment, we're planning on bottling and canning down the line but we're tapped out on space at our current facility. Our capacity had been a hundred barrels a month, but we added three more 45 barrel fermenters last week, so we're gonna be doing 250 barrels a month."

Sierra Nevada's East Coast rep says their Foam Pilsner (a rare "meh" from SN but it still beats a Miller Light) is sold at Phish Concerts. First Ben and Jerry's, now beer? How spoiled are jam-band consumers these days, I mean seriously!

Troegs had Mad Elf and Perpetual IPA. Perpetual was quite hoppy with just enough malt to keep it East Coast Style. This should be good for holding over hop-heads during the seasons when the elusive Nugget Nectar is nowhere to be found.

Top Three:

3) Sixpoint Brewing Spice Of Life Crystal: This has everything you need. Plenty of malt, plenty of hops, and like the best IPAs, just a touch of spice.

2) Stone's Ruination Double Dry Hopped IPA: The dry hopping really does this aggressive hop-bomb wonders.

1) Firestone Walker Parabola: A bourbon-aged Russian Imperial Stout 12.5 ABV. Out-of-this-world delicious. There's no words. They should have sent a poet.
