A new market planned for Headhouse Square

The Headhouse Shambles have been home to the crown jewel of the The Food Trust's urban farmers market thrust for years now, so we're excited to learn that marketeers will soon get a chance to pull double duty at Second and Lombard. Tomorrow, Bobby Logue and Tom Henneman of Bodhi Coffee (410 S. Second St.) are meeting with the South Street Headhouse District to hammer out details of a new Friday-night market they plan to launch this spring. In contrast to Sunday morning's farmer- and restaurant-heavy lineup, this new weekly fixture will showcase the wares of local manufacturers.

"I've got a nice little network of people in all facets of production, be it textiles, leather goods, carpentry, millwork or hardware," says Logue. "We want to provide a showcase environment for people who are doing really cool things all over the city as far as manufacturing goes." This, of course, will include a significant amount of locally made food products, but Logue is clear that he wants to complement, not compete, with The Food Trust's Sunday. He compares the approach to Brooklyn Flea, Portland's Saturday market or Rosebank in Johannesburg, with the focus placed on wrought-from-scratch products as opposed to reclaimed/resold flea-market fare.

Vendors will set up early Friday afternoon and hawk until 9 or 10 p.m. at night, accompanied by complementary entertainment — there's a classical concert series skedded to launch once it gets warm, and Logue hopes to encourage surrounding businesses to throw open their doors to encourage foot traffic. The market does not have a name just yet but it should soon.
