A word about commenting on Meal Ticket

Hi everyone! It's Drew Lazor, your friendly neighborhood Meal Ticket editor. First off, I'd like to thank everyone for bearing with us here at City Paper while we transition our web presence over to this spiffed-out new site. Like any major shift of this nature, there are plenty of unforeseen wrinkles we still need to take care of moving forward. We're making some sweet progress so far, but there's still much work to be done.

While we improve, I'd like to take the occasional moment to address issues that have been raised by multiple Meal Ticket and CP readers. And one of the questions that's come up most often is the issue of commenting.

To be sure, commenting on our new site (both on this blog and on citypaper.net as a whole) is different than it was on our old site, but it's still a very straightforward process. The biggest difference is REGISTERING AS A MEMBER. You didn't have to do this before; on the new site, you've got to do it once and you're set for life. FOR LIFEEEEEEEE.

A quick breakdown on what to do:

1. At the top of the site, next to the CP logo, you'll see "login" and "register" links. Clicking on "register" will take you to this NEW MEMBER REGISTRATION page.

2. Fill in all the required fields, paying especially close attention to the EMAIL ADDRESS (use a valid email, as you must confirm your registration!) and USERNAME fields. The latter field has been the source of much confusion. Many people have received the following error message when registering:

"The username or email address specified is already in use. Please choose another username and try again."

In all likelihood, you'll get this message if SOMEONE ALREADY HAS YOUR REQUESTED USERNAME. On CP's old site, you could comment as "Mike" or "Stan" or "Katie" or whatever, drop a quick comment and be done with it. On our new site, you must register with a UNIQUE USERNAME, as you're joining a community of established commenters via our partners at philly.com. In other words, someone probably already has Mike, Stan or Katie. So use your last name, or take a nickname on, or some numbers — anything to make the username YOUR OWN.

- After you land on a username, click the "CREATE ACCOUNT" button on the bottom of the screen. You'll receive a confirmation email. Confirm that shiz, and you're ready to freak out and comment on EVERYTHING! That wasn't so bad, was it?

If you've got questions, comments or concerns about any of this, please email me at drew.lazor@citypaper.net.

I believe one reason you might get the "email address already in use" message is if you were already registered as a commenter on Philly.com. That happened to me on the 1st or 2nd day of your new system (I know... it pains me to admit that I was a registered commenter there), so I did the lost password thing and it was sent to me, and all was good.

Yes, that's definitely another culprit too Danya, thank you for pointing that out. Regardless of the cause, though, I just want to make sure people aren't discouraged by the message, thinking they're doing something wrong — it's just a matter of choosing a good username (and/or fishing out that password), and you're golden.

Comments are part of what makes MT one of the best local food sites. While I know it's unlikely any of the MT contributors had much of a say in the migration to the Philly.com infrastructure, the old format was more user-friendly. Buying in to Philly.com is like buying stock in dinosaur treats.

Irregardless, the content remains solid, thank you.

Rascal, I couldn't agree more that reader comments are a HUGE part of what we do here at Meal Ticket. That's why it's so important to me to make sure everyone is accommodated. Thank you for your feedback. I'm confident we'll get everything smoothed out.

Darn no more what website do you represent when commenting anymore. I see no one else has taken Hughe, that's good.
