Afternoon Snacks

Today's Afternoon Snacks has a party for lovers of food and books, lobster tasting at Matyson, and a celebration of stouts on Thursday.

Foodie litnerds, get scheming: tomorrow at Penn's Kelly Writers House (3805 Locust Walk), they're throwing an Edible Book Party. Anyone who feels like making something or just browsing is welcome (you can just show up)—the only catch is that your edible offering must relate somehow to books and literature. Decorate a cake in thematic elements from your favorite novel, dream up a cookie flavor that plays on a title, recreate a dish described in a book you love, or whatever you can think of. In fact, based on the rules, we think you'd be fine to carve a book out of a big hunk of cheese. The party starts at 6 p.m. tomorrow, Jan. 29—and yes, there will be prizes awarded to the best creations. (Check out this wrap-up from last year's party if you need some inspiration.)

This week, Matyson (37 S. 19th St.) is putting on what always ends up being one of their most popular tasting menus each year: Lobster! You'll want a reservation for this one for sure—and if you want to come prepared, take note of the new wine pairing recommendations, courtesy of Moore Bros. (you may recall that the wine shop recently paired up with the BYOB for a special dinner). As always, the tasting menu is $45 a pop and will be available through Thursday:

Pumpkin Seed Soup
Barley, squash, mint

Potato Gnocchi
Bottarga, creme fraiche, citrus ash

Chawanmushi
Foie gras, mushroom, pear, parsnip

Veal Sweetbread
Curry, cauliflower, almond, leek

Bananas Foster Poundcake
Vanilla ice cream

Wine Recommendations

Chateau de Bois Brincon Anjou Terre de Gres 2010
Corte Gardoni Becco Rosso Corvina Veronese 2011
If you love dark beers or easily stained clothing or both, Varga Bar (941 Spruce St.) has the party for you: this Thu., Jan 31's White Party and Craft Stout Invitational. The party kicks off at 7 p.m. and yes, you are encouraged to wear all white. (No word on whether folks who turn up in dark colors—hey, some of us are clumsy—will be turned away at the door, so maybe dress on the safe saide.) On tap? Tons of stouts. See the list below, but NB: more are promised to be added before Thursday.
 Goose Island Bourbon County
Troegs Scratch #83
Great Lakes Blackout Stout
Oskar Blues Ten FIDY
Left Hand Wake Up Dead NITRO
Port Santa's Little Helper
Ballast Point Victory at Sea
Allagash Bourbon Black
Dogfish Head Bitches Brew
Sierra Nevada Narwhal
Harpoon Leviathan Czernobog
