Afternoon Snacks

POSTED: Thursday, January 3, 2013, 3:38 PM

On today's Afternoon Snacks we've got a seasonal outdoor pop-up in Bucks Co., Hawk Krall rounding up his favorite hot dogs of the year, and a great afternoon snack suggestion from Craig LaBan.

Uwishunu has all the details on the Snow Bar at Chaddsford Winery, which sounds like a lovely stop if you’ll be doing any local touristing during the snowy season. Only open on weekends now through March, the space is a heated tent with fire pits and mulled wine (or wine cocktails, or, y’know, wine wine) in the midst of a picturesque Bucks County setting that, with any luck, will be blanketed in snow when you visit.

Also, in case you missed it over the holidays, last week Hawk Krall also rounded up his favorite hot dogs of 2012 for Serious Eats. It’s definitely worth a look—we found the inclusion of Swiacki kielbasa particularly heartwarming. (First-person aside: although my family moved out to the suburbs before I came along, our roots are in Port Richmond, which meant regular Easter and Christmas pilgrimages to wait in line at Swiacki. There are no other acceptable options.) The round-up hits hot dogs from all over, but other locals that made the cut were all-veal frankfurters from Rieker’s, the Thanksgiving Dog at Misconduct, and this past summer’s awesome corn dog special at Hot Diggity.

Finally, for a straight-up snack suggestion, Craig LaBan offered a good one today on twitter: assorted bureka from La.Va Café (2100 South St.). They’ve got potato, mushroom, and spinach-feta versions of the phyllo-wrapped treat regularly available, and we can attest that they make for a very fine snack indeed.
