Afternoon Snacks

POSTED: Tuesday, January 8, 2013, 3:43 PM

Fresh new year, fresh new start: new monthly specials at Jake’s, a new menu for Osteria, Philly’s newest food truck, and a new (and newly kosher) weekly menu from Miss Rachel: all on today’s sparkling new edition of Afternoon Snacks.

So, a new month must mean new specials at Jake’s Sandwich Board (122 S. 12th St.). (Although, if you were taken by December’s pork cheek chili special, take heart: Drew Lazor reports that they’ve made it a winter-long menu item.) Up for January: a chocolate cherry shake that blends cherry soda and chocolate ice cream, and a BBQ brisket sandwich with housemade barbecue sauce, fried onions, and melted provolone (above).

Psst, Osteria (640 N. Broad St.) just rolled out a new menu, and chef Jeff Michaud has been showing off the new additions (like, omg, this tripe with fried egg and potato) on Twitter.

Mac alert: street food devotees got a new spot to check out today as Mac Mart has finally started serving. Drexel got the benefit today; here’s their Twitter to steer you in their direction moving forward. On the menu: well, mac and cheese of course—on its own, in various loaded specialty forms, in build-your-own format, or between bread à la grilled cheese.

Finally, here’s the menu for this week’s Farmhouse Table dinner at Miss Rachel’s Pantry (1732 W. Passyunk Ave.). Because where else are you going to get a kosher, vegan meal that features both tacos and redeye gravy? (If you provide an answer in the comments, you’re a damn smart aleck, but we’ll also be pretty impressed.)

As always, dinner’s at 7 p.m. and costs $45 per person. There are only 12 seats available, so you’ll want to reserve by calling 215-798-0053 or sending a request via the contact form on their site.
