Afternoon Snacks

POSTED: Wednesday, October 10, 2012, 3:54 PM

Limited edition concretes, fall menu changes (including new fresh pastas) at In Riva, and a pumpkin ice cream PSA, all on today's Afternoon Snacks.

As DesignPhiladelphia takes hold of the city for the next several days, even Shake Shack (2000 Sansom St.) is getting in on the action. They’re hosting an exhibit of new products from Shift Space Design, the brand behind the much-talked-about wall of greenery that served as the shop’s construction fence during renos, as well as the green you now see along the Shack's facade. And tomorrow evening (Oct. 11 from 5:30 – 7 p.m.) you can stop by for their “Concretes by Design” reception. They’ll be serving two limited-edition concretes (pictured above) featuring ingredients from La Colombe and Nook Bakery: the first, called "Nook’s Fall Look," combines vanilla custard with Nook’s graham cracker pumpkin pie; the second, "La Colombe’s Espresso Session," blends chocolate custard with LC’s Nizza beans, cannoli shells, and cinnamon-fudge sauce.

The Southern Italian fare at East Falls’ In Riva (4116 Ridge Ave.) is getting a bit of a boost for fall. Starting tomorrow, Oct. 11, in addition to a number of seasonal changes, the restaurant will be rolling out new fresh pastas made in-house. The new menu features short ribs, pea soup, and pizzas featuring earthy combinations like potato, leek, and gorgonzola, or rosemary ham, Brussels sprouts, and balsamic—and, of course, the new pastas. Chef Arthur Cavaliere will update the pasta offerings on a monthly basis to reflect the best of the season; here is the starting lineup:

GARGANELLI, lamb ragu, black olive, pine nut

CORONE, pea, shallot, truffle

NASTRINI, lobster, chanterelle, basil

FIONDETTE, pork sugo, asparagus, oregano

Finally, a word on what we’re currently pining for—pumpkin ice cream—and the sad fact that we somehow momentarily forgot until now about one of our favorite places to get it this time of year—Franklin Fountain (116 Market St.), of course. Not because they’re the only ones in the pumpkin ice cream game (we’ve been very happily eating More Than Just Ice Cream’s version for years as well), but specifically because of their Great Pumpkin Sundae. It’s a pretty simple thing: pumpkin ice cream topped with their homemade caramel sauce, pecans, whipped cream, and cinnamon. But we love it, and if you do too (or think you could), well, learn from our boneheaded mistakes and don’t forget that it’s Great Pumpkin season right now.
