Afternoon Snacks

POSTED: Thursday, October 11, 2012, 3:11 PM

Chefs Jeff Michaud and Brad Spence hit Dude Food to demo a classic that we think anyone with even a passing interest in pasta should have in their arsenal: cacio e pepe. The black pepper and pecorino romano pasta is one of the simplest dishes around—but if a few dismal versions of cacio e pepe we've been served in the past are any indication, the simplest dishes can sometimes be the easiest to screw up. If you want someone to show you how not to screw it up, you could certainly do worse than Vetri family members Michaud and Spence.

Elsewhere in the Vetri empire, weekend brunch is being taken over by the canine crowd. This Sunday, Oct. 14, at Alla Spina (1410 Mt. Vernon St.), you're welcome to bring your pup along for a little plein air brunch. The crew's baked up a ton of biscuits and dreamed up a "special doggie menu," and there's even a costume contest in the works, if you've got the type of mutt that will tolerate the indignity of a silly hat. Proceeds go to the great Love Four Paws, who will also be on hand with some adoptable dogs and cats to introduce to any guests looking to expand their families. (Reservations are strongly encouraged, and there's a rain date set for the following Sunday, though right now the forecast looks awfully nice.)

Yesterday, Eater reported some very exciting news about an expansion in the works at Barbuzzo (110 S. 13th St.). Looks like chef Marcie Turney and partner Valerie Safran are looking to renovate their second floor to make space for things like cooking demos, classes, and private events. Sounds good to us!
